급작스럽게 이루어진 강화 천도, 이 시기 강화도를 강도(江都)라 불렀다. 강화도로 옮긴 고려 사람들은 궁궐을 지었으며, 개경을 본떠 사찰을 건립했다. 강도 불교가 시작됐다. 육지는 전쟁터였다. 김윤후 스님이 처인성에서 몽골 장군 살리타이를 죽이기도 했지만, 승리는 잠시뿐. 경주 황룡사가 불탔으며, 부인사에 보관돼 있던 초조대장경 목판이 불탔다. 백성들의 삶과 죽음은 상상하기를 멈춘다.

굶주린 도적들이 부질없이 설치는데
우리 임금님 오로지 부처님 힘만 믿으시네.
저 범패 소리 용의 울부짖음과 같게 한다면
어찌 오랑캐가 사슴 달아나듯 하지 않으랴.

부처님 위신력에 기대는 길만이 고려인들의 유일한 방책이었을까? 강화도 곳곳에 가궐(假闕)을 짓고 기도했으며, 대장경을 다시 만들었다. 마니산은 단군이 제사를 올리는 곳이 됐다. 강도에 머물렀던 일연 스님은 환도 직후 『삼국유사』를 기록했으며, 이승휴는 『제왕운기』를 남겼다. 38년간의 강도시대. 강화도에는 고려의 흔적이 남겨졌고, 강화는 고려인의 정체성을 다시 구성했다. 그곳, 강화도를 탐방해보자.

A decision to move capital to Ganghwado Island was suddenly made when it was called Gangdo then. Goryeo went to the Island and built palaces and temples modeled after Gaegyeong, the original capital. Thus, Gangdo Buddhism began. The land was a battlefield. Monk Kim Yoon-hu even killed the Mongolian general Salitai at Cheoinseong Fortress, but the victory was short-lived. Hwangnyongsa Temple in Gyeongju was burnt, and the woodblocks of the Tripitaka Koreana stored in Buinsa Temple were destroyed. Lives and deaths of people stopped imagination.

Was it the only way for Goryeo to rely on th Buddhist power? They built make-shift palaces in various places in Ganghwado Island, prayed and re-created the Tripitaka Koreana. Manisan Mountain became a place where Dangun held ancestral rites. Monk Ilyeon, who stayed in the island, wrote Samguk Yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms) right after capital was returned, and Yi Seung-hyu left behind the Jewang Ungi (Songs of Emperors and Kings). 38 years at Gwangdo Island. Traces of Goryeo were left there, and the island reconstituted the identity of Goryeo people.
