[이솝우화]는 서양에서 ‘성인들의 도덕 교과서’라고 불리면서 성서 다음으로 많이 읽힌 책으로 기록된다. 또한, 오랜 세월 동안 반복 회자되면서 ‘지혜의 칼, 언어의 칼’이라고 평가받기도 했다. 고대 그리스의 철학자 플라톤에 의하면 소크라테스는 감옥에서 죽음을 기다리면서 [이솝우화] 몇 편을 운문으로 만들었다고도 한다. 중세 시기의 철학자들과 수사학자들은 [이솝우화]를 학생들에게 예문으로 제시하면서 도덕을 논한 것으로 유명하다. 그래서 ‘이솝적’이라는 표현은 검열을 피하기 위한 우의적이고 정치적인 발언뿐만 아니라 작자 미상의 문학 전통을 가리키는 표현으로 쓰이기도 했다.

게와 어미 게

게가 아들에게 말했다.
“얘야, 넌 왜 그렇게 한쪽으로 걷니? 앞으로 곧장 나아가는 것이 훨씬 더 좋단다.”
어린 게가 대답했다.
“엄마 말이 맞아요. 엄마가 곧장 걷는 것을 보여 주시면 제가 따라갈게요.”
어미 게는 노력했지만 결국 실패했고 불평 없이 새끼의 책망을 받아들였다.
