Gifts in language
I like to share my thoughts on translating my
poetry collection ¡ºGod¡¯s Gift ~ Mothers¡» into the
English version,¡ºGod¡¯s Gift ~ Mothers¡».
The part I like most from the Analects of
Confucius is this:
"If you like ¡®In(ìÒ)¡¯ and you don't like learning
you become foolish, if you like wisdom and you
don't like learning, then the result is hollowness and
debauchery, if you like loyalty and you don't like
learning then it is harmful to righteousness, if you
like honesty and don¡¯t like learning you become
heartless, if you like courage but don¡¯t like learning
the result is violence and chaos, if you like to be
firm but don¡¯t like to learn the result is insanity.¡±
Writing is a process and product of my learning.
¡®In(ìÒ)¡¯ also means love. It is wondrous to see love
for people, things, and nature being united by poetry.
My name contains the characters ¡®In(ìÒ)¡¯ and I want
to live up to the meaning of my name.
I want to express my thanks to my role models,
Prof. Seong-ho Yoo, Prof. Sang-ho Lee, Prof.
Jeong-min, Jae-bok Lee, Prof. Kyeong-seok Seo, Prof.
Do-heum Lee, Prof. Seong-hwan Cha, Prof. Seon-tae
Jeong, Prof. Dong-ok Shin, Prof. Heung-nyeon Kim,
Prof. Kyeong-dong Han.
I also want to express my gratitude to all poets
who share their hearts through literature.
Thank you to Tina Kim and Prof. Joseph Yi who
worked on the English translations, and my German
friend Proebstle, Niklas Benedikt Pascal, who translatred
the title poem into German.
This book has been made more meaningful to me
because of the help of these generous people.
Furthermore, I am grateful this collection of poetry
has been born again into the English language.
Although I won¡¯t be able to in person, I want to be
together with people through my poetry.
Lastly, I would like to express my appreciation to the readers of this book.
The optimistic love that meets the
sublime starlight Lee In-young's poetry
Yoo Seong-ho
(Professor of Korean Literature at Hanyang University and Critic)

1. The wisdom of a starlight and the energy
of a newborn
Lee In-young's collection of poetry ¡ºGod¡¯s Gift ~
Mothers¡»(2020) is a sincere confession filled with
the sublime beauty of the starlight. Inside is her own
introspection and pledges laden with love. This pulls
in the warmth of people into the heart. Like this,
Lee In-young embraces both herself and the reader
simultaneously. Her warm nature is refelcted in her
writing and touches our heart, giving consolation and
healing from the rough and dreary world we are
living in.
2. Mature language that reflects introspection
and resolutions.
Lyric poetry usually gets its motif from in between
reality and dream and becomes complete through
language. If it leans too much on one side, whether
it be the reality or the dream, it can only contain
part of the reasons and senses of humans. So lyric
poetry draws in the reality acutely, but also provides
abundant languages of the dream and sings of the
point of contact of reality and dream. This dream
heals the traces of the tragic ruins of reality and
helps the audience to pursue the imagination.

3. The power of memory spreading to a heart
of 'love'
Generally, the idea of 'memory' is something that
satisfies the characteristics of arts based on tempo of
lyric poetry, and also helps humans to discover and
realize their deep desires in an aggressive manner.
This is because most notions of time is in the form of
a memory inside lyric poetries. Memory is something
that has been a fixated method of lyric poetry, and
it was also born through the experience of poets
throughout time in an effort to bring back to life, or
reenact the things that are disappearing.
In-young searches for the roots of what made her
who she is through her own distinct memories.
Going back to the roots, she looks into herself in
the present. Looking back on the difficult times of
her life, her poem contains the narratives of the
tough times. This allows the reader to feel empathy
towards the writer and engages their emotions. The
song that calls for memories slowly spreads into a
feeling of love.

4. Life¡¯s paradoxical antibody and its¡¯ role
Lee In-young¡¯s poetry has a very imaginative aspects
of society. Whether it be an object or a memory, through the traces left behind after time has passed,
she discovers the history of life and death, the birth
and extinction of situations and projects herself into
it. To her history is not a stagnant time in the past,
but something that is alive and moving in the
present. This consistently confirms the poet¡¯s unique
poetic existence. The paradox of language creates the
power to lead the readers into a message of hope,
whether it be on a personal level, or a community.
Lee¡¯s first collection of poetry duplicates the
everyday lives of people, all the while containing the
paradoxical antibody that exists in lyric poetry. I
congratulate on Lee In-young¡¯s collection of poetry
and wish her to keep developing as a poet who
already possesses so much love and optimism.

Dear mothers of the world
Because of you, I could live.
Your tears.
Your sweat.
They made me who I am.
Because you worked through sleepless nights
I was able to sleep comfortably.
Through the sincere efforts of the world's mothers,
Lands were cultivated and love blossomed.
I finally realize a bit of this truth,
Now that I am older.

The beautiful star¡¯s death

The beautiful star¡¯s death looks similar to the death
of my heart. A red and yellow light surrounds the
flashlight. The outer light¡¯s remains bulges out and
creates a wave. Like the death of the star, my
thumping heart faces death.

Power of Optimism

What is my friend¡¯s secret for being so popular?
Always smiling, it was like my friend had the happy
virus.

The power of her optimism made the hearts of those
around her brighten.
To the friend who always said no possessed a dark
shadow within.
It was revealed in the eyes.
If we start to feel that the things that we always say
no to,
can be changed into an attitude of optimism,
then other friends will greet you with a warm smile.
I give the power of optimism a present with a flower
spreading inside a glass marble.
