Atlas of Pelvic Surgery 3판의 제작을 준비하면서 나는 pelvic surgery를 시행하는데 지속적으로 사용되는 술기들을 기록하였었다. 이러한 수술 중 일부는 골반내 장기들과 골반 질환과의 밀접한 관계 때문에 수술시 다양한 전문성을 필요로 하는 경우도 있다. 이 책에 설명된 수술들에 사용되는 몇가지 술기들과 수술과정들에 관하여 다른 합리적인 의견들도 있을 것이다. 게다가, 이 책에서 설명되는 대로 수술의 집도의가 각각의 수술을 항상 정확하고 만족할 수 있는 정도로 할 수는 없다. 집도의는 자신의 수술 기법들을 환자 개개인의 상황과 처치해야 할 문제에 적용시키면서 항상 즉각적으로 대처할 수 있어야 한다. 이 Atlas는 전반적인 길잡이 역할, 즉 외과의사 자신의 수술 술기를 쌓는데 토대가 됐으면 하는 의도로 만들게 되었다.
이 Atlas의 3판에서는 1판과 2판에서 다루어지지 않은 수술들을 포함하고 있다. 나는 1판과 2판을 통해 많은 젊은 의사들에게 익숙하진 않았지만, 후에 그들의 환자들에게 유용하게 사용될 수술 기법들을 열심히 배울 수 있게 용기를 북돋아 주었다는 것에 대하여 매우 기쁘게 생각한다.
