Eric Carle is acclaimed and beloved as the creator of brilliantly illustrated and innovatively designed picture books for very young children. His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has eaten its way into the hearts of millions of children all over the world and has been translated into more than 25 languages and sold over 12 million copies. Since the The Very Hungry Caterpillar was published in 1969, Eric Carle has illustrated more than 60 books, many bestsellers, most of which he also wrote.

뉴욕에서 태어나 여섯 살이 되던 해에 독일로 건너갔다. 독일 슈투트가르트 시각 예술 학교에서 그래픽 아트를 공부 한 뒤, 다시 뉴욕으로 돌아와 〈뉴욕타임스〉의 그래픽 디자이너로 일했다. 작가 빌 마틴 주니어의 권유로 그림책 작업을 시작한 그는 1968년 첫 그림책 《1, 2, 3 동물원으로》를 발표하였으며, 1969년에 출간한 《아주아주 배고픈 애벌레》로 큰 인기를 얻었다. 전 세계 70여 개 언어로 번역되고, 5,500만 부 이상의 판매를 기록한 《아주아주 배고픈 애벌레》는 에릭 칼의 대표작이자 그림책계의 스테디셀러로 손꼽힌다. 로라 잉걸스 와일더 상, 볼로냐 국제도서전 그래픽 상 등 유수의 상들을 수상하며 작품성을 인정받아 온 그는 2021년 91세에 세상을 떠났다. 작품으로 《갈색 곰아, 갈색 곰아, 무얼 바라보니?》, 《심술궂은 무당벌레》, 《아주아주 바쁜 거미》, 《아빠 해마 이야기》 등이 있다.
