Briony, a blond girl at the age of 13, is sitting at her desk typing. Her room is meticulously clean, all of her belongings in order. She has just finished typing her first play. She takes her final page and adds it to a small pile of manuscript next to the typewriter. The cover reads THE TRIALS OF ARABELLA by Briony Tallis.
3. INT. STAIRCASE AND HALLWAY. DAY
Briony picks up her manuscript and holds it tightly in one hand and hurries down the hall past a door opening on to a spare bedroom where a housemaid is making up twin beds. Briony doesn? even take a glance at her. She hurries along, scurrying down the staircase and into the huge kitchen.
4. INT. KITCHEN. DAY
In the kitchen, the housekeeper, Grace Turner, is polishing the silver, while Betty, the cook, and other kitchen maids are busy preparing for dinner. Briony bursts into the kitchen.
BRIONY : I?e finished my play!
GRACE : Well done, dear.
Grace looks up and replies, not stopping a moment from polishing the silver.
BRIONY : Have you seen Mummy?
GRACE : I expect she?l be in the drawing room.
Grace answers while continuing to polish the silver.
BETTY : I hope you?e not going to be getting under our feet today, Miss Briony, (reaching for the refrigerator) we?e got a dinner for ten to prepare.
Briony stares a moment at Grace, turns around and leaves the room.
5. INT. HALLWAY. DAY
Briony hurries back down the hall when she sees Robbie Turner, 24, putting on a pair of gardening boots. Briony leans against the wall. Robbie spots her.
ROBBIE : Hello, pal. I hear you?e putting on a play.
BRIONY : Who told you?
ROBBIE : Jungle drums.
He is tying the laces of his boots.
BRIONY : Will you come and see it?
She asks casually.
