<우리 문화의 뿌리를 찾아서> 시리즈의 영어판 25번째 권으로 한국의 전통 마을이 형성된 배경과 기능 및 특징을 역사적으로 고찰한 책이다. 마을의 전통은 역사 발전과 더불어 일관되게 지속되기도 하지만 때로는 변형되거나 소멸되기도 한다. 특히 급격한 현대화 물결에 의한 서구문명 제일주의는 우리의 전통적 요소를 부정적으로 바라보게 함으로써 소멸의 길을 재촉해온 것이 현실이다. 이 책은 우리의 전통에 대한 절대적 가치를 인정하면서 장구한 세월 속에서 마을의 전통이 현재까지 유지되고 있는 거주 공간을 찾아 위치ㆍ형태ㆍ기능 등 다양한 기준에 의거하여 그 고유의 성격과 구조적 특색을 밝혀내고 있다. 먼저 1장에서는 역대 왕조의 도성들이 통치 이념이나 사상적 체계에 맞추어 어떻게 조성되었으며 발전하고 쇠퇴하였는지 살펴본다. 2장에서는 서울 주변에 형성된 별궁 마을과 종묘 마을, 생원 마을, 묘지기 마을 등을 기능에 따라 각각의 특성과 역할에 대해 알아본다. 3장은 지방 통치 거점으로 조성된 읍성 마을, 4장은 교통과 군사 기능이 두드러지는 포구나 나루 및 병영 마을, 그리고 5장에서는 제사나 종교 기능과 관련된 사당 마을 등이 조성된 근원을 역사적으로 고찰한다. 마지막으로 6장에서는 입지 조건에 따라 농촌 마을과 산촌 마을, 어촌 마을을 형성하면서 우리 조상들이 어떻게 자연을 극복하고 주변 환경과 조화를 이루면서 삶을 영위해왔는지 보여준다. This book, the 25th in The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots series, is an historical examination of the background to the formation of traditional Korean villages along with their functions and characteristics. In some cases the tradition of a village is continued in harmony with historical development but in other cases it changes and sometimes disappears. Belief in the superiority of Western civilization resulting from rapid modernization has led to negative assessment of traditional elements and thus accelerated the decline of traditional villages. Under recognition of the unquestionable value of tradition, this book explores human settlements with a long history that have continued to the present time, shedding light on their nature and compositional characteristics according to their location, form, and function. Chapter 1 examines the development and decline of the capitals of past Korean dynasties based on their ruling ideologies or belief systems. Chapter 2 describes the function and role of specialized villages such as the detached palace village near Seoul, villages round shrines, scholars' villages, and grave keepers’ villages. Chapter 3 is about regional fortress villages, which were centers of local rule, while Chapter 4 looks at villages at ports and ferry crossings with strong military or transportation functions. The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots “The Spirit of Korean Cultural Roots” is a bilingual project aimed at explaining the origin and evolution of Korean culture in a series of compact books. The series, published in Korean and English, began in 2005.
