여러 동물이 어울려 사는 공원에서 뜻하지 않게 영웅이 된 개를 주인공으로 하는 사랑스러운 이야기에 아름다운 일러스트가 입혀진 그림책이 찾아왔다. 『The Every』의 작가 데이브 에거스(Dave Eggers)가 전작 『Her Right Foot(자유의 여신상의 오른발)』에서 호흡을 맞췄던 일러스트레이터 숀 해리스(Shawn Harris)와 다시 한 번 합심해서 내놓은 작품이다.
주인공 요하네스(Johannes)는 해안가 공원에서 살고 있는 떠돌이개다. 그가 하는 일은 공원의 '눈(the Eyes)'으로서 공원에서 일어나는 온갖 일을 지켜보면서 공원의 터줏대감 격인 세 마리의 들소에게 매일 같이 보고하는 것이다. 그의 친구들, 즉 갈매기, 너구리, 다람쥐, 사다새도 그를 도와 '보조 눈(the Assistant Eyes)' 역할을 맡고 있다. 그들은 공원을 찾는 사람들과 동물들을 주시하면서 공원 내에서 사람과 동물 간의 균형(the Equilibrium)이 잘 유지되는지를 확인한다.
그런데 공원에 변화가 일기 시작했다. 문제적 여행자들(Trouble Travelers)을 포함해 인간이 더 많아지고 있다. 정체를 알 수 없는, 최면에 걸린 듯한 사각형들로 채워진 새로운 건물이 점점 높이 솟아오르고 있다. 그러고는 어디선가 염소떼가 나타나더니 요하네스의 세계관이 바뀔 만한 충격적 사실이 드러난다.
우정과 아름다움, 자유에 관한 이야기가 매우 빠른 속도로 전개된다. 이 책을 읽은 독자들은 나이를 불문하고 자신들을 둘러싼 세계를 전혀 새로운 시각으로 보게 될지도 모른다.
