Hangeul is the center of the Korean Wave

The popularity of Korean pop culture in Asia and later the world that started from the late 1990s is called the “Korean Wave.” The Korean Wave, which includes our TV shows, movies, songs, cuisine, and clothes, is taking the world by storm. Here, BTS jumped into the scene following PSY’s “Gangnam Style.” BTS’s song “Butter,” ranking number one on the Billboard Hot 100, is sweetly melting the world. Not only are their clothes and hairstyles subjects of global interest, but also our culture’s grand bow that the group performed to give thanks to their audiences.
What enabled the Korean Wave?
I believe that Hunminjeongeum, therefore Hangeul, is the root of the Korean Wave.
Hunminjeongeum, which King Sejong created in secret to avoid the eyes of his courtiers obsessed with toadyism, has walked a turbulent road. Subjects opposing the creation of Hangeul protested “Objec- tion!” to King Sejong’s face, Prince Yeonsan burned all books writ- ten in Hunminjeongeum, and the Japanese banned us from using our language and alphabet to diminish our national spirit. Despite such adversities, Hunminjeongeum survived.
The first Korean immigrants to America pretended not to know Hangeul. Back then, English was the best language and Hangeul was
an embarrassing language from a small country. Now, things are dif- ferent. In order to be recognized in American society, Korean Amer- icans must know not only English, but also Hangeul. Hangeul gave them courage and raised them up in that society.
Hangeul consists of vowels and consonants. All vowels are from the three fundamental vowels, “· (Sky) ㅡ (Earth) ㅣ (Human),” and the rest are created from these three. The fundamental consonants that mimic the shape of the mouth when pronouncing words are “ㄱ,ㄴ, ㅁ,ㅅ, and ㅇ.” The rest of the consonants are variations of these by adding different strokes. There were a total of 28 vowels and conso- nants Originally. No word unable to be expressed by these 28 char- acters exists. How simple! Therefore, Hangeul is easy to learn and get used to.
Even while writing this I did not have a clear understanding of Hunminjeongeum’s roots. I just had a vague idea. However, I had an awakening after reading writer Park hae jin’s Road of Hunmin- jeongeum. I had only tasted the fruits of Hunminjeongeum without knowing its roots before. Therefore, I didn’t know its full taste. I was ashamed.
I wanted to share the road Hunminjeongeum has taken with you. That way, we can understand our nation’s roots and take care of them.
When I met writer Park hae jin and shared my plans to rewrite Road of Hunminjeongeum for students, he consented readily. From that moment, I began selecting sources and writing. As I was writing, King Sejong’s words to Monk Shin-Mi and Prince Soo-Yang lingered in my ears: “Keep official records of the process. That way Hunmin- jeongeum survives
Hunminjeongeum endured those difficult times with its courage to survive. Now it wants to fly the world with that same courage. That courage was also the reason why my student Elizabeth Chung read my book and wanted to translate it into English!
At the end of this book, from where my writing ends, Elizabeth’s writing follows. I wrote about Hangeul’s road up to the Japanese occupation and Elizabeth continues its stories from there on. As I know Elizabeth to be an avid reader since childhood and a talented writer, I was more than happy to allow this.
If you read Elizabeth’s writing as well, you will gain respect for Hun- minjeongeum’s courage in the face of various obstacles. It is certain that you will want to love Hunminjeongeum as I do.
I hope that Hunminjeongeum, crafted from King Sejong’s dedica- tion, plants a seed, germinates, and thrives in your hearts. I pray that you all, armed with Hangeul, will stand at the center of the world. That way, Hangeul will survive and we will rise.
This book is easy as it is for students like you. Pictures selected by writer Park hae jin and Elizabeth Chung will broaden your breadth of understanding. Just as a tree uses its veins to transport water from its roots to its branches to its leaves, Joseon’s history is also connect- ed to Hunminjeongeum. You will be able to naturally absorb history as well.

■ 새로 쓴 훈민정음의 역사
이책은 전 세계 문자의 우뚝한 봉우리인 소리문자 훈민정음(한글) 창제의 비밀과 교육, 확산의 역사를 새롭게 조명하고 그것을 청소년들이 읽을 수 있도록 아주 쉽게 쓴 책이다.

“우리는 글을 알고 너희는 글을 모르는게 당연해. 글을 읽고 쓰는 우리는 사람이고 글을 읽지도 못하는 너희는 팔다리 달린 짐승일 뿐이야.”

이런 생각을 가진 사대부가 무지한 백성을 짐승처럼 부리고 살고 백성들의 기회를 차단하는 것을 본 세종은 백성을 위한 비밀 프로젝트를 가동한다. 바로 훈민정음(한글)의 발명이다.
이 책은 세종의 비밀 프로젝트인 훈민정음 창제 과정의 비밀, 창제 이후 최만리 등과의 갈등, 보완과 연구·교육, 문종과 신료와의 갈등, 수양대군과 조정의 충돌(계유정난·사육신의 난), 세조의 불교와 유학을 아우른 보급과 확산, 예종과 성종대의 내리막길 등 훈민정음 창제사를 사진과 함께 편집하여 읽은이로 하여금 창제과정에 참여하듯 술술 쉽게 따라가 볼 수 있다.
집현전 학자 중심의 훈민정음 창제사에서 한 걸음 더 나가 역사의 뒤편으로 밀려나고, 삭제된 훈민정음 창제에 기여한 핵심 인물인 혜각존자 신미스님의 이야기도 찾아내 더불어 조명한다.

■ 최고의 언어, 새로운 문자인 훈민정음 창제와 확산, 그리고 수난의 길
훈민정음이 나온 뒤 수양대군과 안평대군은 『석보상절』과 『월인천강지곡』의 편찬에 매진했다. 불교를 통해 훈민정음을 교육하고, 확산했다. 한쪽에서는 최항·신숙주·성삼문·박팽년·이개·강희안를 중심으로 『용비어천가』와 『동국정운』의 편찬에 매진했다. 이책은 그 과정을 재미있게 소개한다. 또 훈민정음으로 발간한 주요한 책도 잘 소개한다.
세종은 승하하기 며칠 전 세자(문종)에게 신미를 ‘선교종도총섭禪敎宗都摠攝 밀전정법密傳正法 비지쌍운悲智雙運 우국이세祐國利世 원융무애圓融無? 혜각존자慧覺尊者’에 봉하라는 유훈을 남기고, 1450년(세종 32) 영릉英陵에 든다. 문종은 국상을 끝내고 유훈대로 ‘훈민정음으로 나라를 돕고 세상을 이롭게 했다[祐國利世]’는 뜻이 담긴 법호法號를 신미에게 내렸고, 순간 정국은 가마솥처럼 펄펄 끓는다. 박팽년과 하위지가 반대의 선봉에 섰다. 대소신료는 선종과 교종의 모든 승려를 아우르는 지도자의 자리에 오른 혜각존자 신미를 ‘간승姦僧’과 ‘요승妖僧’으로 몰아붙이며 밤낮을 잊은 채 법호를 거두라고 문종을 압박했다. 세종이 내린 법호는 철저하게 무시당했다. 소장파 유신은 자신의 꿈을 펴기 위해 왕권에 도전했다. 공공연하게 세종의 호불好佛을 집요하게 물고 늘어졌다.
문종이 일찍 세상을 뜨게 된 것도 냉정하게 보면 지병 때문만은 아니었다. 고명대신들은 어린 단종을 등에 업고 그들의 세상을 만들려고 했다.

수양대군은 혜각존자 신미와 함께 세종을 보필하며 훈민정음의 원리를 궁구하던 날을 잊지 않고 있었다. 피로 세운 조선, 그 피의 얼룩을 문치文治로 씻어낸 아버지 세종. 부왕이 온 정성을 다해 창제한 훈민정음을 지키기 위해서라도 할아버지 태종이 썼던 ‘칼’을 당겨오지 않을 수 없었다. ‘계유정난’과 ‘사육신의 난’을 통해 반대 세력을 잘라내고 왕위에 올랐다.
세조는 집권 후 간경도감을 설치, 불전 언해사업에 공력을 집중했다. 신미를 스승으로 모시고 『월인석보』·『능엄경』· 『묘법연화경』·『원각경』·『아미타경』·『금강경』·『반야바라밀다심경』·『선종영가집』·『몽산화상법어약록』·『목우자수심결』·『사법어』·『육조법보단경』 등의 빛나는 훈민정음 언해본을 간행했다. 혜각존자 신미의 입적 이후 불전 언해의 맥은 끊어졌다.
불전 언해를 통한 훈민정음의 보급은 탁류를 거슬러 맑고 넓은 소통의 바다로 들게 하는 방편이었다. 훈민정음은 ‘오직 만물의 뜻을 열어 놓고 천하의 모든 일을 이룩하리라[開物成務]’는 생각을 실천에 옮긴 결과물이었다. 이후 당파 싸움으로 훈민정음도 길을 잃고 헤매는중 중종에 이르러 한자 자습서인 훈몽자회를 최세진이 펴내고 선조가 교지를 훈민정음으로 내리며 한석봉, 정철, 율곡 이이 등이 훈민정음으로 글을 발표하면서 명맥을 이어간다. 광해군때에는 드디어 한글소설, 동의보감이라는 의서까지 나오게 된다. 그러나 인조 반정 이후 훈민정음은 바다 위를 표류하는 난파선의 신세가 된다. 겨우 숙종 때부터 문화는 기운을 얻어 출판은 왕성해진다. 구운몽, 사씨남정기 같은 책이 나오고, 영조의 문치정치로 여사서, 우리나라 최초의 백과사적인 동국문헌비고, 조선 최고의 음악책으로 영조가 서문을 쓴 악학궤범 같은 책이 나온다. 실학이라는 새로운 학문이 나타나면서 역사책인 동사강목, 연행록 같은 책도 출간된다.
정조때도 문화는 융성했지만 훈민정음으로 펴낸 책은 드물었다.
고종 때로 넘어가 국호가 대한제국으로 바뀌고 한성순보라는 신문이 나오는데 한문과 훈민정음을 섞어 펴낼 예정이었지만 한문으로만 발간된다. 드디어 서재필이 창간한 독립신문에서 훈민정음(언문)으로만 된 신문이 탄생한다.
그런 신문도 1910년 한일 합방으로 조선이 일본의 식민지가 되면서 훈민정음은 우리 얼 우리 정신의 표상이 된다. 합방 후 우리 말과 우리 글인 훈민정음을 못 쓰게 하고 갖은 탄압을 하였지만 우리의 독립운동가들은 나라와 함께 훈민정음을 꿋꿋이 지켜 오늘에 이른다.

■ 한글이 얼마나 과학적이며 다른 언어에 비해 얼마나 우수한지에 대한 이야기와 해방 이후 한글이 더 널리 알려지게 되었고, 방탄소년단이 한글에 날개를 달아주는 이야기까지 쉽고 재미있게 읽을 수 있게 했다. 부록으로 한달음에 읽는 훈민정음의 길/한눈에 보는 조선왕조 왕의 계보/하루만에 배우는 자모표를 수록했다.

이책은 이렇게 걸어온 훈민정음과 우리나라의 역사를 동시에 읽게 해주는 우리 모두의 훈민정음(한글)에 관한 필독서이다.

A Word of Appreciation

Ever since I could read, I always harbored an avid interest in liter- ature. From an early age, English and Korean literature, whether it be the Harry Potter series or Korean folktales, were always available in my bilingual household. The sheer amount of language I was ex- posed to fostered my love for language, and led me to pursue a lan- guage education beyond my school’s curriculum. My parents were very supportive of my passion, and that is how I met the author of Fly, Hunminjeongeum! at the formative age of nine. She was my Kore- an history and writing tutor. She helped me develop my own writing style, encouraged me to critically analyze even the simplest short stories, and most importantly, furthered my interest in literature. My journey with Fly, Hunminjeongeum! began when my tutor offered me a book she had authored. The book she gave me was about the Korean alphabet, “Hangeul,” and its history. Even before I knew it, I developed a personal connection to the alphabet. My knowledge of Korean history, albeit modicum, instantly attracted me to the book. I found great value in its lonely history of persecution and rejection even among Koreans. I wanted to share Hangeul’s history and legacy with people interested in learning more about Korea, the linguistic world, and just about anyone and everyone. Thus, I began my trans- lation journey. Little did I know, the next two years of my life would be dedicated to sharing this book with the worl As I worked on my translation, I realized how little I knew about my own language. Ironically, I was as uneducated about Hangeul as the people I created my translation for. Every new aspect of Hangeul I came across deepened my respect for it. I marveled at the scientific elements of the alphabet, like how all the characters were derived from the shape of the tongue. I admired the inclusiveness of Han-geul, where the combinations of vowels and consonants, respect- fully called “Mo-um” and “Ja-um,” are able to express every sound and word known to man. Unfortunately, the more I investigated the alphabet, the dire need for additional research on the alphabet became more apparent. The disappointing amount of scholarly articles and academic appreciation for Hangeul gave me all the more reason to share the story of Hangeul with a wider audience.
This translation is an ode to the beauty, resilience, and ingeniousness of my language, and I hope to share its legacy to the world. I am endlessly grateful for the learning opportunity I was able to grasp through this experience.
