Instruction

1 Talk about some things that students eat that may be gathered locally. Talk about materials that are used for medicinal or religious purposes, construction, livestock feed, or clothes.
Example: marigold (for religious ceremonies), cotton (clothing), oilseeds (food), bamboo (construction), etc.
2 Go to a nearby mountain, creek, and/or plain and collect some of the edible plants (fruit, vegetables, grasses, etc.) firsthand.
3 Cook a meal or snack with the materials found. The materials should match with what grows seasonally in the region. If necessary, the teacher may bring materials or food to the class instead.
Example: cook rice cakes mixed with edible flower petals or make tea with jasmine flowers.
4 Create a makeshift table using a tree stump, a stone, or the ground. Decorate the table with flowers, grasses, and weeds.
5 Have students sit around the table and take turns talking about what parts of nature they are grateful for. Before eating together, everyone should shout, ¡°Thanks, nature!¡± ...p17

Instruction
1 Read ¡°¡ÆSilent Spring - Where Have The Bees Gone?¡±¡¾ together.
2 Ask the following questions about the reading for understanding. Show students the eight filled-in panels from the Appendix and have them choose which panel has the answer to each question.
¡Ü What¡¯s the difference between a world with and without bees?

¡Ü What role do bees play in bearing and growing fruit?

¡Ü Why are there fewer bees in the world now?

¡Ü Why can¡¯t we live without bees in the world?

¡Ü What should we do to help protect the bees?

3 Pass out the templates for the four-panel cartoonactivity. Students should draw their own four-panel cartoons from the perspective of a bee on how he or she feels eating food that has been damaged by herbicides and pesticides. If they wish, they can include what the bee would say to humans.
4 Have students look at each other¡¯s work and take time to sympathize with the bees¡¯ feelings...p25
