The New Everyday English 3 textbook is designed for intermediate students
who already have a basic knowledge of conversational English. It aims to
meet the needs of college attendees from various backgrounds and fields of
study. Students will develop communication skills by studying
topic-oriented lessons. These lessons are structured upon topics. The text
also attempts to meet student's interests and reduce their anxiety about
studying another language.
New Everyday English 3 is organized into 12 units centered upon topics
related to student life and real world situations. Each unit can be completed
in a two-hour class or extended with supplementary material to suit longer
periods.
This textbook also works in tandem with a companion online cyber
learning program that provides students with self-study language lab
material. Through the cyber learning program students can log on and
prepare for the subject material of each unit before studying the book.
Furthermore, New Everyday English 3 contains a unified structure. Each
unit is broken down in roughly the same way so that students and teachers
alike will become familiar with the sequence of sections and know what to
expect from unit to unit. Although the structure is the same throughout the
book, the activities vary to help stimulate the students as they increase their
speaking, listening, and reading skills. The structure of each unit is as
follows.
Warm-up : Each unit begins with a warm up intended to draw the
students' attention to the topic and subject matter in an interesting way
This section is also intended to be flexible enough that teachers can adapt
it to their own style or add and take what they see fit.
Vocabulary : Following the Warm up is a list of key topic-oriented words
for the students to learn. Most of the vocabulary introduced will be used
throughout the entire unit, so it is useful for the teacher to help students
learn and apply these words as soon as possible.
Dialogue : In this section students study a real world dialogue by
listening to the companion audio file. Following the listening segment, they
practice reading and speaking the script in pairs.
Grammar Focus : In this section key grammar points are explained with
models, charts, and example sentences. The grammar is introduced with
continuity and sequential learning in mind.
Reading/Listening : Each unit includes a reading (listening)
comprehension text with a companion audio file. Students read (listen to)
the text and then answer the following comprehension questions. The
companion audio file can be used at any time throughout this exercise to
help the students sound out and pronounce the text.
Speaking and Writing : In this section students ask and answer (write)
topic oriented questions. It is intended to be flexible enough for students to
practice short answer dialogues or extend the conversation into free talking sessions.
Editing : Each unit ends with exercises that enable the students to
demonstrate their mastery of the language targets presented. The exercises
range in style from editing, fill in the blank exercises, etc.
Review Units : Units 6 and 12 of New Everyday English 3 are review
units. They depart from the structure just outlined and are comprised
primarily of exercises based on what the students have learned up to that
point. Review Units are intended to prepare students for exams as well as
providing opportunity for teachers to check and gauge students' progress.
Unit 6 reviews the content of Units 1 through 5 while Unit 12 reviews the
content of units 7-11.
As every department and class has a different mix of students, teachers are
encouraged to supplement the book with their own activities and ideas.
The textbook committee also recommends feedback from both the teachers
and the students.
