여기 서른 두 개의 예쁜 ‘복음 만화’가 동심과 해학의 옷을 입고 우리 곁에 나타났습니다. 아마도 이 작품을 그리신 쥴리아나 수녀님의 내면 깊숙한 곳에 아기 같은 단순한 마음이 있어 이렇게 표현되었나 봅니다. 하느님 말씀이 아이의 내면에 녹아들어 자연과 동물과 함께 즐겁게 뛰노는 세계야말로 복음이 주는 참 기쁨일 것입니다.

그럼에도 불구하고, 강론을 준비하는 우리 같은 사람에게조차 무겁고 버거운 복음 말씀을 단 네 컷의 짧은 만화로 압축 표현하고 있는 무모하리만큼 순수한 이 단순성(Simplicitas)의 그림 실력은 어디로부터 연유하는 것인지 조심스레 묻게 됩니다.

자그마한 키에 수녀복으로 가려진 얼굴 앞면에는 팔순을 향해 가고 있음에도 맑은 아이의 동그란 두 눈이 약간은 어눌한 한국말이 무색할 정도로 초롱초롱 빛납니다. 춥고 눈이 많은 북해도(홋카이도)에서 태어나 스물다섯에 일본 천사의 성모 트라피스트 수녀원에 들어가 살다 1984년 한국으로 파견되어 수정 트라피스트 수녀원에서 지금껏 살고 계십니다. 어릴 때부터 그림 그리기를 좋아했지만 따로 미술 전문 교육을 받은 적도 없다 하시는 수녀님, 당신에게 중요한 것은 원장을 몇 번 역임했다는 그런 게 아니고 그저 하느님과 함께 하는 매일의 일상을 아이 같은 심정으로 그려보는 것이라고 하셨습니다.
이런저런 의문을 안고 이 작품을 살펴보면서 불현듯 일본 평민들의 시(詩) 형식인 ‘하이쿠(人非句)’가 연상되었습니다. 일본말로 5음절-7음절-5음절로 짧게 끝나는 일본 특유의 압축된 글귀 안에 자연과 마음이 서로 녹아 미학적인 울림을 주는 하이쿠의 시(詩) 형식이 수녀님의 복음 만화 형식의 밑틀이 되고 있는 게 아닐까 혼자 조심스럽게 생각해보았습니다.

수녀님께서 한국에 파견되실 때 그 당시 남자 트라피스트 대원장 보나벤뚜라 아빠스께서 귀한 말씀을 해 주셨다고 합니다. 당신이 젊은 시절 징집된 군인으로 한국에서 병사 생활을 했는데, 일제 강점기 그 시절 한국인들이 당하는 고통을 절감하고 그 잘못을 기워 갚기 위해 봉쇄 수도원에서 들어올 결심을 했다는 내용이었습니다. 한국과 일본이 복음의 진리 안에서 서로서로 선을 이루며 살게 되기를 희망하며, 말없이 땅에 묻혀 죽어 사는 듯, 소리 없이 녹아드는 소금인 듯 오늘도 고되게 일하고 기도하는 트라피스트 수도자들 모두에게 이 자리를 빌려 큰 감사를 드립니다.

A Word of Thanksgiving
Here you will find a lovely Gospel comic strip comprising 32 panels! The artwork displays the innocence of childhood, including some pleasant humor. The strip unveils Sr. Juliana’s heart, illustrating how to live a Trappistine monastic life with child-like simplicity. The Joy of the Gospel is really about being completely absorbed in the Word of God - in such a state, I imagine, one can playfully interact with the environment that one belongs to as the Creator has provided.
As a clergy, I find it challenging to get Gospel messages out to the congregation every time I prepare my homily. However, Sr. Juliana delivers the Gospel messages remarkably effectively, eliciting us to engage more profoundly in the Gospel with pithy words - simply by a four-panel cartoon strip. From where did such extraordinary talent originate?
Sr. Juliana is petite in her stature but lofty in her zeal. She is a woman in her 80s. However, it is not the monastic habit, but her child-like bright eyes that conceal her age. If you meet her in person, her keen eyes speak more than words can express. She was born in Hokkaido, the cold and snowy region of Japan. She entered a Japanese Trappistine monastery at age 25 and came to Korea in 1984 in her early 40s. Since then, she has been living in the Sujong Trappistine Monastery.
Sr. Juliana told me that she has been fond of drawing since her childhood but never had any special art training. She assumed the role of the Superior of the Monastery out of obedience and faith. But Sr. Juliana has always wanted to create art from her childlike heart. Through her drawings, she has doted on capturing an ordinary life immersed in God.
As I surveyed her artworks, they reminded me of the traditional Japanese poetic form, Haiku, composed by the common folk. Haiku is typically characterized by 5-7-5 syllabic patterns with a final “cutting word” that concludes the verse with a heightened sense of meaning. The Haiku helps the heart of readers to be with nature, with particular aesthetical resonance. In many ways, I suppose Sr. Juliana has adopted this simple and powerful literary frame in her artwork.
When St. Juliana was asked to come to Korea, Abbot Bonaventura of the Trappist monastery in Japan shared a few words that she has kept and treasured in her heart. While serving in Korea as a young military conscript during the Japanese occupation, he witnessed the pain imposed on Koreans by the Japanese, which ultimately led him to enter the cloistered monastery - to make the reparation for Japan’s wrongs.
I hope that the people of Korea and Japan will find their way to live together side by side for the common good as expressed in the Gospel Truths. I would like to express my sincere and unstinted gratitude to all Trappists and Trappistines: praying and laboring, living in stillness fixed to the ground “as if they are buried and forgotten,” and in silence as salt melts without noise.
