Arranged like constellations or ¡°unorganized pieces exist together¡±
On the bookshelf in my office, all the books are arranged in alphabetical order from A to Z. They are arranged simply from A to Z, alphabetically, neither by contents nor by categories, such as architecture or art, Japanese or English, and photo books or critical essays. So the book of Richard Serra is next to that of Shaker furniture. Regardless the relationship between Serra and Shaker, these books happened to be arranged next to each other by chance just because they start with the same alphabet ¡°S¡±. Even before arranging in this way, the bookshelf has been also organized neatly. However, one had to know if Serra is an artist or a philosopher in order to put the book in the right place and thus it was quite difficult for the others besides me to grasp the entire collection. By arranging the books alphabetically, from A to Z, we have gained such a comfortable space where everyone besides me can find the book.
¡°Configuration¡± has various meanings, ¨ç external form, shape, outline ¨è aspect, constellation, spatial arrangement ¨é composition, initial setting ¨ê shape, unit of recognition. I consider the bookshelf in my office as one of ¡°Configuration¡±. Those books lined up there are in the certain arrangement by certain setting, certain shape and certain contiguity relation. In other words, ¡°Unorganized pieces exist together,¡± and ¡°They exist together but are the unorganized pieces¡±.
I am interested in something connecting here, there and over there. Certain ¡°here¡± is connected to certain ¡°there¡± and then connected to ¡°over there¡±. It is valid not only for space (place) but also for time (history). We now exist here, and still can recollect that past time and that place. It can be said as a memory, or a memory to the future. In that sense, I am not very interested in describing now and here, or in creating something that does not exist. Considering ¡°Configuration¡± is the space to become conscious of being connected to somewhere which is here, and not here.
In this book, the various contents, the works from A to Z, floor plans, section drawings and site plans are collected together and they are not arranged by each single work. It is because I wanted to make a multilayered book, which one can move the pages back and forth to understand the works and another can review only the esquisses if desired. I tried to realize the circulating and wandering space in this book, where everyone can move each tab freely without the dead-end. _by Naoyuki Nagata
