책은 서역으로의 여정을 통해 정체성을 찾게 되는 손오공의 이야기와 중국계 미국인인 진이 초등학교부터 고등학교 때까지 겪는 여러 사건들을 교차해서 보여준다. 주인공 왕진이 원하는 것은 오직 자신이 속한 집단에 잘 어울리는 것뿐이다. 하지만 전학 간 학교에서 진은 유일무이한 중국계 미국인이다. 이에 괴롭힘의 대상이 되고 친구라 부를 만한 아이들도 거의 사귀지 못한다. 그렇게 지내던 어느 날, 진은 완전한 미국인인 한 여자아이에게 반하게 된다.

두 번째 이야기는 원숭이들의 왕 손오공의 이야기다. 손오공은 원숭이들의 왕이지만 정작 자신은 원숭이임을 부정하고 신들의 세계에 속하고자 한다. 이러한 열망은 중국계 미국인으로서 완전한 미국인이 되기를 열망하는 주인공 진과 묘하게 겹쳐진다. 손오공은 절대적 창조주인 '자유자(自有者)'에 의해 500년간 돌산에 봉인된다. 그러나 선사를 만나 봉인이 해제된 뒤 그는 서역으로 여행을 떠나며 자신을 발견한다.

또 다른 이야기는 학교에서 인기 있는 농구선수인 대니의 이야기. 그는 해마다 사촌 친키 때문에 전학을 다닌다. 친키가 중국인에 대한 부정적인 고정관념의 극단을 보이며 망신을 주기 때문이다. 게다가 올해는 상황이 더욱 악화되었다. 언뜻 보아 위의 세 장면은 동떨어진 이야기 같다. 그러나 이 세 이야기는 예기치 않은 반전을 거치면서 하나의 이야기로 교묘하게 발전한다.
