That was because the Republic of Korea was the only legitimate government on the Korean peninsula. When the United Nations learned of the North Korean invasion they convened an emergency Security Council meeting and decided to send UN troops to Korea. In the eyes of the UN, North Korea was an illegitimate state.
Therefore an attack on the Republic of Korea was an attack on the United Nations and it was only natural for the UN to send troops. For the first time since the establishment of the UN, the United Nations Command was stood up to protect world peace and freedom. Sixteen nations showed support by sending combat troops and five countries sent medical units. Thirty nine other countries sent much needed supplies which put the total to sixty countries that supported the Republic of Korea. It took two months before the UN troops arrived because they came on ships from America, South Pacific, and Africa. - º»¹® Áß¿¡¼

With the sudden attack at Incheon the North Korean army was in panic. They were like a rat in a jar and started to retreat on all fronts. Once we took Seoul, president Rhee told General MacArthur that "we must proceed North without delay". The United Nations was not prepared to advance beyond the 38th parallel but president Rhee wanted to continue the fight and achieve unification which lead to an important decision. - º»¹® Áß¿¡¼

The last ship to leave Heungnam port was the SS Meredith Victory. The ship did not have enough food or water and the weather was very cold. After three days at sea she safely arrived to Geoje island. During the three day travel the ship gained five more people because babies were born. The Americans nicknamed them Kimchi and called them Kimchi one to Kimchi five. That is why people call the Heungnam evacuation the 'Christmas miracle'. In 2004, the SS Meredith Victory was recorded as the ship that saved the most people by Guinness World records. - º»¹® Áß¿¡¼

No, not a single person was returned. South Korean prisoners of war were not returned either. The North Koreans lied that there were no prisoners of war and so there was no way to check. Then in 1994, South Korean prisoner of war Lieutenant Cho, Changho managed to escape and informed us that there were still prisoners in North Korea. Lieutenant Cho escaped by way of the West Sea for the first time and informed us that there were over one hundred thousand prisoners in North Korea. Since then about eighty people have escaped and returned to Korea. Some have taken North Korean leader Kim, Jong-Un to court and won settlements. These are real heroes because they have exposed to the world the existence of illegally held prisoners in North Korea. We must do our very best to return anyone who is still alive in North Korea. - º»¹® Áß¿¡¼

This photograph taken in the night says it all. North Korea is covered in darkness because of the dictatorship imposed on them while South Korea is bright with plentifulness and freedom. This is possible because we cherish our freedom. The 6¡¤25 war was a victory for the Republic of Korea and we must not forget the great legacy of our fight to protect freedom.
