잉글랜드 노퍽에서 자랐고 현재는 바스에 산다. 여행에 대한 열정과 멋진 세상에 이끌려 아시아와 호주 그리고 뉴질랜드와 미국을 횡단한 뒤 작가로 자리 잡았다. 독립심이 강한 여행자들에게는 성서와 같은 잡지〈원더러스트(Wanderlust)〉의 편집장을 지냈으며〈가디언〉,〈텔레그래프〉,〈인디펜던트〉등에 광범위한 여행 관련 글을 썼다. 또한 십여 권이 넘는《론리 플래닛》에도 글을 썼으며,《500개의 길에 담긴 세계의 역사》와《500곳의 기차 여행지에 담긴 세계역사》, 이 책의 시리즈인 ‘Inspired Traveller’s Guide’ 의 첫 번째 책《Spiritual Places》의 저자이다.
