A casual passerby may, after picking up this book and glancing at its chapter headings, think that this is a history book. And while it is true that this book has been organized chronologically, and while it is chock full of historical content, it is primarily meant to inform the reader about the cultural development of two English speaking states: the United Kingdom of Great Britain and the United States of America. First and foremost it is concerned with the ups and downs, the progress and regress of these people and the historical narrative that it follows is meant to help form a cohesive whole that provides an overall understanding of British and American identity. So this is where it will start; with some clarification of what British and American terms mean and how they are used, followed by a short summary of common cultural studies terms that will be advantageous for people interested in understanding these cultures and other cultural perspectives.

Students in cultural studies often say to me that they dislike or even hate history, to which I respond , ¡°then you must dislike every subject and discipline?¡± History includes all of what came before us and it informs everything in our memory our society, who and what we are. Without history human knowledge would never progress. That being said, it is understandable that students who are taught to memorize dates, statistics, facts, events, people¡¯s names and time periods become exhausted. This cultural studies book is meant to emphasize the perspective and understanding we can gain by studying history from how it was understood at the time to the perspectives throughout the ages up until the present, as well as the constant revision and evolution of understanding that goes along with new contemporary discoveries about our past. This is where the book will start, before the beginning of recorded history where human culture can only be understood through scientific methods, technology archaeological findings and theory.
