Ahlam Shibli, born in 1970, is a Palestinian photographer who explores situations where Palestinians are denied their freedom and excluded from representation by the Israeli occupation. Instead of simply describing reality, she asks fundamental question about land, home, belonging, and loss. Her questioning extends to expellees, refugees, migrant workers, children, and sexual minorities from different parts of the world who are deprived of their homes for different reasons. Shibli combines images with text and connects several photographs to form cinematographic constellations. As John Berger has said about her, Shibli is a ¡°photographer of the hidden¡± who always stands on the side of the hidden.
This book carries 135 photographs taken from 17 series of work spanning from 1997 to 2017. They are accompanied by artist¡¯s statements introducing each series. Ahlam Shibli, in her later work, has attached extensive captions to each photograph which indicate circumstances, time, place, and the names of the persons depicted. The captions are included at the end of the book.
