브라질 소설가 가운데 최고봉으로 꼽히며 세계문학을 논하는 자리에서 빠지지 않는 중요한 작가이다. 어머니를 일찍 여의고 혼혈 화가였던 아버지마저 어릴 때 여의면서 계모에 의해 길러졌다. 계모의 자상한 보살핌이 있었지만 간질병과 말더듬증으로 고생했고 혼혈이라는 사실로 내성적인 성격이 되었다. 공립학교에서 글을 배운 뒤 16세에 국립인쇄소의 활자견습공으로 취직하여 문인들과 교류하며 시를 쓰기 시작하였고 18세부터는 여러 신문에 글을 발표하며 본격적으로 문인의 길에 들어서게 되었다. 27세 때부터는 관료생활을 하면서도 정력적으로 시, 연극, 연대 기, 소설 등 거의 모든 장르에 걸쳐 작품을 썼다. 대표작 중의 하나인 『브라스 꾸바스의 사후 회고록』(1880)은 인간의 본질적 이중성과 불확실성을 드러냄으로써 시대와 지역을 뛰어넘는 보편성을 획득한 소설이라는 평을 받고 있다. 그밖의 주요 소설로는 『낑까스 보르바』(1891) 『동 까스무후』(1899) 등이 있다. 브라질문학아카데미 회장, 교통부 산업청장 등 여러 공직을 역임하였다.

Dave Eggers grew up near Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He is the founder of McSweeney’s, an independent publishing house in San Francisco that produces books, a quarterly journal of new writing (McSweeney’s Quarterly Concern), and a monthly magazine, The Believer. McSweeney’s publishes Voice of Witness, a nonprofit book series that uses oral history to illuminate human rights crises around the world. In 2002, he cofounded 826 Valencia, a nonprofit youth writing and tutoring center in San Francisco’s Mission District. Sister centers have since opened in seven other American cities under the umbrella of 826 National, and like-minded centers have opened in Dublin, London, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Birmingham, Alabama, among other locations. His work has been nominated for the National Book Award, the Pulitzer Prize, and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and has won the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, France’s Prix M?dicis, Germany’s Albatross Prize, the National Magazine Award, and the American Book Award. Eggers lives in Northern California with his family.
