Korea’s Olympic Icon - Kim Un-yong’s Resolute Odyssey, a critical biography of the late Dr. Kim Un-yong, the founder president of the World Taekwondo and of the Kukkiwon World Taekwondo Headquarters, and the former Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) president and International Olympic Committee (IOC) vice-president, will be released on July 1 by the English-language specialist publisher Seoul Selection. The book will be distributed and sold in South Korea and overseas through global channels, including the US-based Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com. It will also be sold in e-book form in the Kindle, Apple, Google, and other online book stores.

This biography is of special significance as a work by David Miller, veteran sports journalist and awards winning author from Great Britain, who has spent six decades traveling to sports events around the globe. Miller has covered 24 Olympic Games, attending 45 annual Sessions of the International Olympic Committee, fourteen World Cup football finals and more than thirty sports in 120 countries. Whilst the focus of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC) publication in 2017, A Big Man Who Embraced the World, Kim Un-Yong, recounted primarily Kim's life and career as national sports hero, this latest work delves into his international impact. Miller and Kim interacted over many years and enjoyed a particular closeness; the author has stated that "there would never have been an Olympics in Seoul had it not been for Kim".

Kim Un-yong's global influence was individually responsible for major events being hosted by South Korea, most notably the Seoul Olympics of 1988 and the FIFA World Cup of 2002 jointly with Japan. Further historic moments included the opening and closing ceremonies of Sydney's 2000 Olympics with joint marches of the North and South teams of the Peninsular arranged by Kim. It was also in the 2000 Sydney Olympics that Kim achieved Taekwondo’s inclusion as an Olympic sport for the first time: a hitherto little known domestic leisure sport.

As IOC President Samaranch's privately intended successor, Kim's mounting fame and senior appointments, as IOC vice-president and as president of the General Assembly of International Sports Federations (GAISF), attracted envy, both within sport and domestically within politics. Lamentable political revenge at home in the aftermath of Pyeongchang’s unsuccessful first of three Winter Olympic bids in 2003, resulting in a contrived prison sentence challenged by the United Nations Human Rights Commission, but symbiotically mirrored by the IOC Ethics Commission, found Kim toppled from authority, forced to resign his IOC vice-presidency just months after being elected by a substantial majority.

Kim would go on to resume his outside activities, much sought after and honoured everywhere, and sharing his sports administration acumen through a 2006 advisory role on the organising committee for the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon and a 2010 advisory role on the organising committee for the 2015 Universiade in Gwangju and taking on positions as an advisor to the KSOC and honorary chairman of the Korea Taekwondo Association. He would also share his ideas through lectures and talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various universities, whilst contributing columns to online and printed media. In 2016 he founded the Kimunyong Sport Committee (KUYSC) and launched the Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships (G1) shortly before his unexpected passing in October 2017.

Educated in history, philosophy, and sports journalism at Cambridge University, Miller has worked as a reporter for such media as the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, and Daily Express. He has established a reputation for his balanced and in-depth reporting and contributions, heading the sports department at the London-based newspaper The Times. Appointed an official IOC historian by former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch, he has written The Official History of the Olympic Games and IOC, updated every four years. He continues writing and lecturing today as a freelancer.

Kim Un-yong’s Resolute Odyssey》이 오는 7월 출간된다. 그는 한국 스포츠의 발전은 물론 태권도의 세계화에 힘썼으며, 세계태권도연맹 및 국기원의 설립자로도 잘 알려져 있다. 이 평전은 영문 도서 전문 출판사인 서울셀렉션에서 기획ㆍ편집하였으며, 국내는 물론 미국의 아마존닷컴 등 글로벌 채널을 통해 해외에서 유통ㆍ판매된다. 또한 이북(e-book)으로 제작되어 Kindle, Apple, Google 등의 온라인 스토어에서도 만날 수 있다.

그러나 이내 스포츠계 안팎에서 그를 다시 찾는 이들이 끊이지 않았으며, 명예와 존중을 되찾을 수 있었다. 2006년에 2014 인천 아시안게임 조직위원회 고문, 2010년에 2015 광주 유니버시아드대회 조직위원회 고문을 맡아 그간 스포츠 행정 분야에서 체득한 통찰력을 후진에 전수하는 것으로 대외적인 활동을 재개했고, 이후 대한체육회 고문, 대한태권도협회 명예회장 등을 맡아 봉사했다. 또한 외교부 등 국가기관, 모교 연세대 등 여러 대학에서 강의, 강연을 갖고 자신의 뜻을 전했으며, 다양한 온ㆍ오프라인 매체에 칼럼을 기고했다. 2016년에는 자신의 이름을 내건 김운용스포츠위원회를 설립했고, 2017년 10월 세상을 떠나기 직전까지 김운용컵국제오픈태권도대회(세계태권도연맹 공식 승인 대회로 올림픽 출전권 획득을 위한 랭킹 포인트가 부여되는 G1 등급 이벤트) 개최를 준비하는 등 삶의 마지막 순간까지 한국 스포츠 및 태권도 발전에 힘썼다.
