영어 사전에서 찾을 수 없는 속뜻으로 명쾌하게 접하는 영어 표현

‘뿌린 대로 거두다’, ‘세상의 소금’, ‘양의 탈을 쓴 늑대’ 등은 낯설지 않지만, 그 유래를 정확하게 아는 이들은 드물다. 이 책은 이들 표현들이 성서에서 어떻게 처음 사용되었으며, 그 어원과 현대영어 속 쓰임까지 실례와 함께 설명한다. 예컨대 제Ⅰ부 8번에는 아벨을 죽인 가인이 ?겨나는 ‘놋 땅’(land of Nod)과 일반 어휘 nod ‘꾸벅거리며 졸다’가 말장난pun 형식으로 쓰이는 것을 소개한다. I’m going to the Land of Nod는 ‘놋 땅으로 간다’가 아니라 ‘잠자리에 들어간다’가 되는 것이다. 호주, 영국, 캐나다 등지에서 오랜 연구 생활을 하면서 고대에서부터 현대 영미문화를 향유해 온 학자이자 신실한 신자인 저자의 연륜에서 우러나오는 기지가 곳곳에서 번뜩인다.

영어 표현과 고급 영미문화를 동시에 접하는 기쁨

그러한 저자의 장기는 고급 영어 표현을 다루는 데 특히 잘 발휘된다. 구약 미가서에 등장하는 ‘칼을 쟁기로’(swords into plowshares)라는 표현은 아이젠하워, 레이건 전 대통령이나 최근 마이크 펜스 부통령 연설의 단골 메뉴이다. 이 책에는 또한 처칠, 오바마의 연설과 간디의 자서전에 나오는 표현들이 등장한다. 아울러 셰익스피어 작품들도 대거 인용되는데, 야고보서에 나온 ‘두 마음을 가진(double-minded) 자’로서 〈오셀로〉의 이야고가 그 한 사례이다. 여기에 〈한여름 밤의 꿈〉에서 영감을 얻은 윌리엄 블레이크의 〈오베론, 티타니아, 퍽과 요정들의 춤〉과 같이 아름다운 명화?성화(聖?)와 생생한 사진자료들은 덤이다. 따라서 이 책은 새로운 형식의 성서이야기이자 영어 표현으로 배우는 영어문화학에 다름 아니다. 성스러운 이야기들 속에서 꼬리에 꼬리를 무는 무궁무진한 화두들은 독자들을 매혹적인 세계로 이끌 것이다.

새로운 형식의 성서 스토리텔링

성서는 유사 이래 베스트셀러라고 하지만 문장이 딱딱한 편이어서 완독하기 쉽지 않다. 영어성서는 더욱 그렇다. 그러나 이 책은 성서의 중요 장면과 일화들을 포착하고 있기 때문에 매우 흥미롭게 성서에 접근할 수 있다. 제Ⅱ부 14번에는 죽기 직전 겟세마네 동산에서 ‘핏방울 같은 땀을 흘리며 간절히 기도하는’ 예수의 모습이 눈에 보이듯 형상화되어 있다. 게다가 당시 생활상을 곁들여 역사 기록이기도 한 성서이야기를 살아 움직이게 한다. 고문서를 천착해 온 영어사학자의 예리한 시선은 양과 염소를 구분하는 유대인의 습속(divide the sheep from the goats 마태 25:32)이나 희생제의 풍속(scapegoat 레위기 16:9-10)에까지 미치고 있는 것이다. 《앵글로색슨족의 역사와 언어》(2003년 학술원 우수도서)와 최근작 《켈트인, 그 종족과 문화》(2018)로 영어사와 고대영국사를 접목해 왔던 저자는 이제 성서와 영미문화의 조우인 이 책으로 연구 생활의 화룡점정을 찍는다. 신자들만이 아니라 영미문화에 관심이 있는 독자들 모두에게 이 유일무이한 향연으로 초대장을 건넨다.
