Intuitive understanding and heart-felt experience of emptiness is one of the most marvelous gifts someone can share with humanity. There have been great beings throughout history whose existence alone, by simply being who they are, reverberates and awakes in people around them a fervent wish and aspiration to be just like them. The words of these great sages, mahasiddhas, who have become emptiness itself often transcend time and space and have the same impact hundreds, or even thousands, of years afterward; and countries, or even continents, apart.
Yet, constrained and ignorant as we are, we need special guides who share the same time and space with us to journey through the pages of Dharma. Many Koreans find such a guide in Master Mubi, who has successfully and eloquently bridged the gap between modern, colloquial Korean and the scholarly Chinese of old times in which the verses were first composed.
By translating a collection of his essays into English, I am simply following his path, though slipping and stumbling in my footsteps. However, I would have been utterly lost and completely misled without the orientation provided by Dr. A. Charles Muller, Dr. Robert E. Buswell, Jr. and other authors of the series Collected Work of Korean Buddhism, who knew ¡°better than to meander,¡± for they understood their ¡°footsteps will serve as wayposts for those who follow¡± them.
