¡°What¡¯s past is prologue.¡±
W. Shakespeare, The Tempest

Korea¡¯s constitutional development is not known as well as its economic development. In fact, it is difficult to find a book written in English that specifies the constitution of Korea. However, as we can see in modern Korea, economic development is only possible under a stable political system guaranteed by the constitution. I believe that the constitution of Korea should not be underestimated, as without it the development of Korean economy could not exist. Right now, Korean politics is full of constitutional demands. This means that the Korean constitution is facing a turning point. As a constitutional historian, I only hope that the foolish mistakes in the past constitutions would not be repeated.
As far as I know, this is the ¡°first¡± English book that focuses on the historical development of the Korean constitution as a main topic. The best way to understand something is to track down its history. The Korean constitution is not an exception to this rule. In this book, I introduced important documents about the history of Korean constitution and commented on each of them. I hope that this book can be a starting point to a deeper study about the Korean constitution.
Last of all, I give thanks to Jonathan Henriques and my daughter, Younwoo Shin for giving me endless help while editing this book. Without their help, it would have been hard for me to finish it in time.
