In the contemporary society, the boundary of Florists has been largely extended. Table decoration is one of their widened scopes. The decoration for a banqueting space has a long history and its tradition has deep root. This book takes a particular look at table decoration among all other aspects for banqueting. Like any other field, table decoration requires many different considerations.
The first is the historical cultural style. The interior and exterior of the architecture where the banquet is held contains diverse meanings, for instance, if the architecture is baroque or modern built with the latest high-tech technology. The table decoration should incorporate design and material that responds to the style of the place.
The second is about how to decide on the types of compositional aspects such as decorative composition, vegetative composition or graphics. It is important to select a type of composition that goes well with the surroundings.
The third is the technique. Rigidity of the technique is without doubt important. In the case of exterior in particular, the choice of technique type has a lot of importance. There are many kinds of techniques available from docking, banding and hanging; however consistency in the use of these techniques is very important and finding the right balance of the techniques, instead of having disjointed styles, is also important when mixing them.
The fourth is creating a perfect combination and harmony between plant and non-plant materials.
The fifth is the audience of the table decoration. The type of people who will be attending the banquet should be taken into account, such as their social status, profession and age, when designing the table.
The sixth is to employ a holistic design approach for a space that embraces 5 senses - seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching by expertly bringing together the different elements such as the attendees' personality to music, lighting, food and the interior.
The last is the florist's capability; they have to be able to create a consistent stage which brings together the atmosphere of the table banquet and above all considerations. Table decoration is certainly not an easy task. As explained above, a good understanding of different elements and technical ability as well as the florist's passion towards new creation will lead table art to new dimensions.
