Forward for the Korean edition of Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Therapies
I am delighted to have this opportunity to write a forward for the Korean edition of my book Psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapies, and deeply grateful to Christine Myunghee Ahn for translating it. I wrote Psychoanalysis and Psychoanalytic Therapist at the request of the American Psychological Association. They believed (and I agreed) that it was important to have introduction to psychoanalysis for American students of psychology, psychiatry and other mental health professions, who are less familiar with psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy than they are with other therapeutic modalities. In writing this book I have attempted to accomplish two goals at the same time.
My first goal was to provide readers with an introduction to the clinical practice of contemporary psychoanalysis and psychoanalytic therapy that spells out key principles and specific interventions, in a way that can serve as a guide to the practicing clinician. To this end I have included clear-cut clinical illustrations and vignettes. The book is also accompanied by a DVD what was filmed by the American Psychological Association, in which I conduct six sessions of treatment with a real patient. I have provided a condensed description in the book, of what took place during these six sessions as well as my analysis of how best to understand the process that is taking place, and a discussion of the principles that the case illustrates. My second goal in writing this book was to provide readers with an understanding of how the development of psychoanalysis has been influenced over the years by a range of different theorists and clinicians living and writing in different cultures and different historical eras. Psychoanalysis is a not unified approach to treatment but rather a family of diverse theories and therapeutic approaches that share certain features, and differ in other respects. These shared features include an assumption that 1) all human beings are motivated, in part, by feelings, wishes and fantasies that are outside of awareness, 2) feelings, wishes and fantasies are kept out of awareness because they are experienced as threatening or painful, 3) human beings are ambivalent about changing, and 4) the therapeutic relationship is an important vehicle of change.
One of the more influential contemporary forms of psychoanalysis in North America is known as relational psychoanalysis ? an approach that first emerged in the early 1980¡¯s. Although this is the form of psychoanalysis which I am most closely identified with and is perhaps the best way to describe the style of psychoanalysis that is illustrated in the book and the DVD, I have been strongly influenced by many other psychoanalytic traditions including traditional Freudian psychoanalysis, Kleinian theory, ego psychology, object relations theory and Lacanian psychoanalysis. I believe that all forms of psychoanalysis have something to offer, and I have tried to provide the reader with a preliminary understanding of the basic principles of a range of psychoanalytic approaches as well as the historical and cultural factors that have influenced their development.
Psychoanalysis as it is practiced in North America during the twenty-first century is very different than the psychoanalysis that was developed and practiced by Sigmund Freud and his colleagues in the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the beginning of the twentieth century. This is not surprising given the fact that North American culture in the twenty-first century is very different than the culture and historical era in which psychoanalysis initially developed. Similarly contemporary Korean culture is different in many respects from contemporary American culture. It is inevitable that the approach I describe and illustrate in this book will have to be adapted if it is going to be of value in Korea. I am most eager to see what type of reception my book is ultimately accorded in Korea and excited to see find out how psychoanalysis as described in this book and others evolves over time on Korean soil.
