마크 트웨인은 독실한 기독교신자인 부인때문에 기독교 사상에 어긋난 글을 쓰지 못했다. 1904년 부인이 사망하면서 마크 트웨인 소설의 주제와 소재가 급격한 변하기 시작한다.

두 편의 소설은 성경과 인간에 대한 비판을 통해 기독교와 인간의 본질에 대한 의문을 제기한다.
이 소설에서는 사탄이라는 주인공을 통해 '인간 그 자체에 대한 비판'과 '인간이 만든 기독교'를 믿는다고 자부하는 이들을 작가 특유의 풍자와 해학을 섞어 신랄하게 비판한다.
