전 세계에 한국의 아름다움을 알릴 수 있는 영문 화보집 『KOREA: Revealing the Beauty Within』이 발간 되었다. 이 책은 한국 소개 영문 도서를 출간하는 Hollym(한림출판사)에서 2년 여간의 작업 끝에 출간한 책으로 한국의 참 아름다움을 잘 드러낼 수 있도록 애쓴 흔적이 곳곳에 남아있다.

서재식 사진가가 전국 곳곳을 돌아다니며 촬영한 한국의 다양한 모습을 ‘도시별’, ‘주제별’로 나누어 한국의 과거와 현재, 전통과 현대를 동시에 보여줄 수 있도록 하였다. 현대적인 대도시인 서울과 부산을 시작으로 한국의 역사와 전통을 그대로 품고 있는 경주 공주 부여, 한국의 얼을 느낄 수 있는 안동과 세계적으로 유명한 화산섬이자 한국의 다양한 아름다움을 품고 있는 제주도까지 한국의 아름다움을 총체적으로 보여줄 수 있는 도시를 엄선하였다. 또한, 한국의 불교와 토속 신앙, 전통 음악, 무용, 음식 및 옛 선조들의 생활 방식이 여전히 녹아있는 시골 정취 등 외국인이 흥미를 가지고 탐구해볼 만한 주제도 간략한 설명과 함께 담겨 있다.

한국을 다녀가는 외국인 친구나 사업 파트너에게 혹은 외국 여행이나 출장 시 선물하기 좋도록 부담 없는 판형으로 제작하였다. 이 도서의 출간이 제목 그대로 한국의 숨겨진 아름다움을 전 세계에 드러내어 널리 알리 수 있는 계기가 되기를 바란다.

The photo book 『KOREA: Revealing the Beauty Within』 is published to reveal Korea’s beauty just as it says. It captures so much of what makes Korea unique and visually spectacular. Within images that will leave an indelible mark on your mind, photographer Suh Jae-sik takes us on a tour of his native country from Seoul to Jeju Island, Korea.

The book contains seven cities and six subjects to show us many different sides of Korea and its real beauty inside. The author begins with modern metropolises, Seoul and Busan, which are the first and second largest cities in Korea. Then he guides us to historic capitals, Gyeongju, Gongju, and Buyeo that can be found cultural relics and historical site of Korea’s ancient kingdoms. His journey continues to Korea’s biggest island, Jeju Island which is considered the best vacation spot in Korea. The tour doesn’t end there. He introduces people who inherit the traditional heritage and their way of life. Anyone seeing this photo book would love to come and see this great country of beauty.
