Preface

One Asia Foundation(OAF), established in 2009, is a private research foundation. OAF aims to establish a single Asian community, firmly based on the values of peace and human rights, and overcoming ethnic, ideological, language, cultural, historical problems. For this purpose, OAF supports various college level lectures on the Asian community, all around Asia, covering more than 380 universities in 38 countries.
Sato Yoji, Chairman of OAF, argues that the value of mutual inclusiveness should overcome Asian diversity. That leads to the ¡°graduation from the walls of the self and ego¡±, from ¡°barriers of company and organization¡±, and from ¡°barriers of nation state and race¡±, which becomes a good ground and starting point for formulating an Asian community. That is why activities of OAF have no official guidelines or formats, which results in an open lecture series. OAF does not formulate these lectures as ¡°School of Asian Community.¡± Many have doubts on formulating an Asian community, because they narrow their sights to institutionalizing the Asian community on the model of the European community. Asian Community OAF pursues a large discourse that is based on creativity and diversity. This discourse, I think, will allow Asians in new generations to finally be free from the existing framework of thoughts and prejudices.
The networking of Asian university professors across borders is essential, and it will help create a strong knowledge solidarity, which will provide a ground for the Asian community. For this, OAF has supported the annual ¡®One Asia Convention¡¯ since 2011. The first convention was held in Tokyo, ¡®One Asia Convention Tokyo 2011¡¯; the second convention was ¡®One Asia Convention Incheon 2012¡¯; and the third convention was ¡®One Asia convention Bandung 2013.¡¯ This year, the Asian Community research center at Jeju national university hosted the fourth ¡®One Asia Convention Jeju 2014.¡¯
Asian Community Research Center(ACRC) of Jeju National University was established in 2012. Its research revolves around various problems in Asia and the relationship between Jeju and Asia. Since 2012, ACRC has started giving Asian community lectures, supported by OAF. The tight relationship between OAF and ACRC became possible because we share the same values. After a one-year long preparation, ¡®One Asia Convention Jeju 2014¡¯ was held in Jeju on Aug 1st -2nd, 2014. This convention had diverse participants, including 350 professors from 210 universities which represented 29 countries from Asia, the US and Africa, together with 600 local citizens and students.
This book, ¡¶Asian Dream and Education for Neo-Asians - One Asia Convention Jeju 2014¡·, aims to capture the moment of ¡®One Asia Convention Jeju 2014,¡¯ and it is published by ACRC and OAF. This book appears in both Korean and English, and it borrows its title from the title of the key note speech of Mr. Moon Kook-Hyun at the last convention.
This book introduces the purpose of OAF, the One Asia Convention and the proceedings from the last conference. In ¡®One Asia Convention Jeju 2014¡¯, 41 proceedings of papers totaling approximately 700 pages were presented. Not all of the papers are selected, because of space considerations. Also, the selections in this book are based on transcripts of the papers. Thus, the papers listed in this book are not the final ones, while this book aims to put forth an objective record. As a result, there are no annotations or references. We tried our best to convey the intended meaning of the writers, but there always can be errors in translation, so please excuse any unintended errors.
Since we first planned this book, a long time has already passed. Asian Community Research Center¡¯s hosting of ¡®One Asia Convention Jeju 2014¡¯ required lots of energy, and we also needed time to refresh ourselves. Many people have shown great interest, and provided so much effort. I sincerely thank Sato Yoji, chairman of OAF and Nichizuka Hidekazu security general. Also, I am also grateful to Prof. Chung Joon-Kon of OAF, who supported the planning and editing from the cover to cover. Prof. Choi Nak-Jin, Prof. Nam Chin-Yeol and special assistant Dr. Ko Kwan-woo made all this possible, so I want to show my gratitude to them. Last, but not least, I sincerely thank Jung Eui Jin, who devoted herself to writing this book before embarking on her studies abroad in the US.
