영어로 된 ‘건국 대통령 이승만’의 생애

올해는 광복 70년이자 건국 대통령 이승만이 서거한지 50년을 맞는 해이다. 이런 의미 있는 시점에 맞춰 ‘대한민국 건국 대통령 이승만’을 외국인들과 해외동포 청소년들에게 알리기 위한 영문 서적이 출간되었다. 이 책은 올 연초에 국내 청소년용으로 발간된 『건국대통령 이승만의 생애』(安秉勳 엮음)를 영역한 것으로, 번역은 재미교포인 크리스 최(Chris Choi)가 맡았다. 크리스 최는 M.I.T.와 하버드대학 양쪽에서 박사학위를 받은 재원(才媛)이다. 책은 1875년 출생에서부터 1965년 하와이에서 서거할 때까지의 삶을 편년체(編年體)로 엮었다. 제1부 항일 독립운동에 바친 청춘, 제2부 대한민국을 세우다, 제3부 불굴의 의지로 나라를 지킨 6·25전쟁, 제4부 불멸(不滅)의 역사로 남은 거인(巨人) 등 4부로 구성되었다. 이승만은 일제 강점기에는 독립운동가, 광복 이후에는 대한민국을 세운 건국 대통령, 또 북한의 남침에 의한 6·25전쟁에서는 유엔군의 참전을 이끌어내어 기적적으로 나라를 지켜낸 호국의 영웅으로서, 한국 현대사의 주역이었다.
