미국에서 가장 인기 있는 작가이다. 1916년 미국 오리건 주에서 태어나, 대학 졸업 후 워싱턴 주 야키마에 있는 어린이도서관에서 사서로 일하면서, 책읽기를 좋아하지 않는 아이들이 읽을 만한 책이 많지 않다는 생각을 하게 되어, 첫 작품인『헨리와 말라깽이』를 쓰게 되었다. 1975년에는 미국도서관협회가 주는 '로라 잉걸스 와일더 상'을 받았고, 1978년에 『라모나는 아빠를 사랑해』와 1982년에 『라모나는 아무도 못 말려』가 뉴베리 영예도서로 선정되었고, 1984년에는 『헨쇼 선생님께』로 뉴베리 메달을 받았다. 라모나 큄비와 비저스 큄비처럼 비버리 클리어리가 창 조한 주인공들은 여러 세대를 거치면서 많은 어린이들에게 기쁨을 선사했다. 그 공로를 인정받아 2003년에는 모리스 샌닥에 이어 두 번째로 미국 정부에서 주는 예술 공로상을 받았다.
