이 책 [Korean Royal Palace: Gyeongbokgung]은 [궁궐로 떠나는 힐링여행: 경복궁]의 영문판이다. 2013년 출간 이후 한국출판문화산업진흥원으로부터 ‘청소년추천도서’로, 문화체육관광부로부터 ‘최우수교양도서’로 선정되었고, 한국출판문화산업진흥원으로부터 ‘수출전자책 번역 지원 사업’에 선정되어 영문판 출간이 이루어졌다.
영문판은 Epub 3.0 전자책(앱북)과 종이책이 함께 출간되어 한국문화와 책의 우수성을 알리는 해외 수출용 도서로 그 영역을 확대하고 있는 중이다. 무엇보다도 아직 국내에서는 실용화 단계에 있지 않은 Epub 3.0 전자책으로 디자인 된 점이 눈에 띄는데, 현재 뷰어의 부재로 인해 앱북으로 컨버팅 되어 구글 플레이를 통해 미국, 영국, 일본 등 전 세계로 유통을 추진하고 있는 중이다.
이번 2014년 4월 7일~10일 사이에 열리는 런던국제도서전에서는 출판 한류의 중심에 서서 Epub 3.0 전자책의 우수성을 선보일 예정이며, 이후 한국출판문화산업진흥원을 통한 뉴욕(북 엑스포 아메리카), 북경, 프랑크푸르트 국제도서전에도 참가할 계획이다.

우리 궁궐 경복궁의 아름다움을 세계 속으로!

최근 정통사극의 붐을 일으키고 있는 KBS 대하드라마 [정도전]은 태조 이성계와 함께 조선의 새 역사를 쓴 정도전을 새롭게 해석한 드라마이다. 경복궁의 이름 ‘경복(큰 복)’과 경복궁의 주요 전각 ‘강녕전’, ‘연생전’, ‘근정전’, ‘사정전’ 등의 이름을 태조의 명을 받아 정도전이 지었다는 사실은 새삼스럽다. 이는 새로운 왕조의 이상인 성리학적 세계관을 건축적으로 표현한 것이었다. 임금의 은덕과 어진 정치로 인해 백성들이 아무런 걱정 없이 살아간다는 뜻으로 왕조가 큰 복을 누리며 번성하기를 기리는 의미가 담긴 경복궁. 이렇듯 경복궁의 역사적 의미와 전각들의 이름들을 풀어보면 정도전의 민생 사상을 엿볼 수 있으며, 경복궁이 우리 역사에서 어떤 의미인지를 깨닫게 해준다. 그 경복궁의 역사가 500년을 이어 아직도 우리 곁에서 살아 숨 쉬고 있다.
조선 최초의 궁궐이자 법궁이었던 경복궁은 우리 민족의 정신이 살아 숨 쉬던 공간이었지만, 일제강점기 36년 동안 철저히 파괴되었고, 우리 민족의 삶도 굴욕과 고통과 상처로 얼룩져왔다. 그 치욕의 시간을 견디어내고 해방 후 반세기가 지나서야 우리 역사에 대한 인식의 재고와 문화재에 대한 복원이 한창 진행 중인데, 저자는 복원된 궁궐의 아름다움을 재발견하고 우리의 메마른 감성을 치유해주는 공간으로서 궁궐 산책을 제안한다.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is the first-built palace of the Joseon Dynasty and the last-rebuilt artwork by Regent Heungseon, Yi Ha-eung, biological father of King Gojong, embodying Joseon’s architectural tradition.

Amisan Mound is a small mound of flower beds made up of four tiered stone terraces upon which the soil excavated from the pond of Gyeonghoeru Pavilion is filled, and seasonal flowers and trees were planted for the queen to enjoy change of four seasons.
There are several mountains named Mt. Emeishan in China, and the most famous one is in Shandong Province which is considered as a fairyland where Taoistic hermits live. At the lowest terrace, there are two lotus flower shaped stone mortars of which rim toads are carved on. According to an ancient Chinese legend, Hang-a swallowed the elixir of immortality given to her husband by the Queen Mother of the West, and ran away to the moon, but turned into a toad. Hence Amisan Mound is the world of the moon where a goddess of the moon lives.

Mt. Bugak located behind the Gyeongbokgung Palace with blue sky as its backdrop changes its landscape by the season thus brings out even more the beauty of Hyangwonjeong Pavilion. If you stand in the south of Hyangwonji Pond, you can see a blue dragon symbolizing Mt. Bugak behind the Hyangwonjeong that has been watching Gyeongbokgung and Hanyang City surrounded by the four big gates. Near Mt. Bugak’s peak, as two boulders protrude, they appear to be like glaring dragon’s eyes.
