Unlike other texts, Quick Korean differentiates itself by offering video lectures to study Korean. The objective of this text is to allow the learner to study Korean through everyday conversations and situations with the characters of a typical Korean family. This is an elementary level text consisting of 15 lessons, each of which contains 2 units, resulting in a total of 30 units. Each unit can be studied along with an accompanying 25 minute video lecture. Each unit covers basic topics necessary for everyday conversations such as how to greet others, how to introduce oneself, and how to make appointments. To try not to overwhelm elementary learners, careful consideration went into making each video lecture. Each unit introduces 4 to 5 new words and 2 new grammar points. Roughly 150 new words and 60 grammar points are presented in total across the 15 lessons. Additionally, each unit consists of a ¡®Vocabulary Plus¡¯ section allowing the learner to study an additional 10 to 20 words and collocations. Finally, each unit also consists of a combination of listening, speaking, reading, and writing exercises to evaluate the learner¡¯s progress and understanding.
The following is an explanation of the different parts of the text:
¡Ü Learning Goals ÇнÀ¸ñÇ¥ : The learning goals of each lesson are broken down into function, topic, vocabulary, and grammar goals. The learning goals are presented on the front page of each lesson. At the end of each unit, a culture point that is related to the topic is introduced in English, which the learner can read without difficulty.
¡Ü Dialogue : Each dialogue takes place between two people. The dialogue is presented through an animated video and can be watched as many times as desired. Through the video lesson, the learner becomes familiar with the conversation and can check his or her understanding through questions that are presented below the dialogue ´ë´äÇØ º¸¼¼¿ä. An English translation is provided next to the dialogue, allowing the learner to understand the dialogue more clearly.
¡Ü New Vocabulary : In each unit, around 5 new words are introduced. Through the video lessons, learners can understand the meaning and usage of the words more easily.
¡Ü Grammar : Each unit contains 2 grammar points and understanding of the grammar is reinforced through the video lesson instructor¡¯s explanation. (The instructor¡¯s explanation is in Korean, but English subtitles are provided.) Because this is elementary level grammar, the grammar points are presented in a simple way so the learners do not experience much difficulty. The explanations are also presented in English. Charts are used to present the grammar visually in an organized way. Example sentences are given to help illustrate the grammar function and usage.
¡Ü Grammar Practice : After each grammar point is explained, a practice section including exercises on completing sentences and dialogues allows the learner to practice using the new grammar. A model solution is also provided in the answer section. Located in the back, in Á¤¸®ÇØ º¸¼¼¿ä, the learner can further test his or her knowledge of grammar through multiple-choice questions.
¡Ü Listening : In the listening section, questions are presented and answered in the
video lecture. The listening section dialogue is a slightly altered version of the main dialogue, which allows the learner to easily approach a new dialogue, while expanding knowledge. The listening section not only provides practice exercises, but also presents the learner a variety of different situations, which helps expand the learner¡¯s vocabulary.
¡Ü Speaking : The learning goals were designed with speaking as a key component. Exercises in the speaking section are presented to check the learner¡¯s speaking ability.
¡Ü Vocabulary Plus : While a strong point of this text is that it can be studied through a video lesson, there is a time constraint since it is not a face-to-face lesson. To overcome this, a number of extra vocabulary words are presented in a text separate from the video lesson. Words were selected based on whether they were related to the topic of the lesson and function, and the learner can pick and choose words to learn as needed. The main English meaning is also presented, along with examples, so that these words can be studied without the need of a dictionary. Furthermore, the learner¡¯s understanding of the words can be checked in È®ÀÎÇØ º¸¼¼¿ä. The learner can also test his or her understanding in the Á¤¸®ÇØ º¸¼¼¿ä section. A select number of key Vocabulary Plus words are also presented in the video lesson.
¡Ü Reading : The Reading is presented in the first unit of each lesson. In this section, a text of a different genre related to the topic of the lesson is presented containing the new vocabulary and grammar. By providing a related, but different text, it will allows easier expansion of knowledge for the learner.
¡Ü Read and Write : In the second unit of each lesson, there is a Read and Write section. This section is designed so that the learner can use the vocabulary and grammar from the lesson by writing a short reflection on the features of the genre of the text after reading the text.
¡Ü Culture : A total of 30 culture points related to the dialogue of each unit are briefly presented in English so that elementary learners can learn about Korean culture without difficulty. Much consideration went into presenting topics appropriate for elementary learners. Much focus was placed on cultural topics related to everyday life that learners may be curious about as opposed to difficult topics. Elementary learners can enjoy becoming familiar with Korean culture while also learning the language.
