1932년 런던에서 태어났다. '퀸틴 블레이크를 싫어하는 어린이를 본 적이 없다.'는 말을 들을 정도로 전 세계 어린이 독자들의 사랑을 받았다. 16살때부터 '펀치'지의 만화가로 활동하였고 첼시미술대학에서 공부해 프리랜서 일러스트레이터로 일했다. 또 캠브리지대학에서 수학하고, 런던대학에서 교육학 석사 학위를 받았으며, 지금은 로얄예술대학에서 20년 이상 학생들을 가르치고 있다. 1960년 그림책의 그림을 그리기 시작한 블레이크는 지금까지 거의 300권의 그림책을 만들었으며 그중 '데이지는 못 말려', '앵무새 열두 마리', '하늘을 나는 돛단배' 등의 작품 을 직접 쓰고 그리기도 했다. 1980년에는 그림책 '맥노리아씨'로 케이트 그린어웨이 상을 받았고, 1996년에는 '어릿광대'가 볼로냐 국제 도서전에서 올해의 어린이책으로 선정되었으며, 2002년에는 안데르센 상을 수상했다.
