1909년 오스트리아 빈에서 태어나 빈 대학에서 예술사와 고고학을 공부하였다. 1935년 훗날 ‘템즈 앤드 허드슨’을 세운 발터 노이라트로부터 어린이를 위한 역사책을 써달라는 요청을 받고, 6주 만에 원고를 완성하여 이 책 『곰브리치 세계사』를 냈다. 1936년에 영국으로 이주하여 런던 대학의 바르부르크 문화학 연구소의 일원이 되었고, 1976년 정년 퇴임할 때까지 미술사를 연구하며 학생들을 가르쳤다. 그 외에 옥스퍼드 대학, 케임브리지 대학, 하버드 대학에서도 강의했다. 1972년 영국에서 기사 작위를 받았고, 1975년 오스트리아의 과학과 예술 분야 명예 십자 훈장, 1977년 독일의 공로 훈장, 1975년 에라스무스 상, 1976년 헤겔 상, 1984년 오스트리아의 명예 기장, 1985년 발잔 상, 1988년 영국 메리트 훈장, 비트겐슈타인 상, 1994년 괴테 상을 받았다. 『곰브리치 세계사』를 영어로 번역하던 2001년에 세상을 떴다. 쓴 책으로 『서양미술사』, 『예술과 환영』, 『이미지가 우리에게 들려주는 것』 등이 있다.
