It was Sir Charles's mysterious death in the grounds of Baskerville Hall that brought Sherlock Holmes to the scene of one of his most famous and intriguing cases.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859. After nine years in Jesuit schools, he went to Edinburgh University, receiving a degree in medicine in 1881. He then became an eye specialist in Southsea, with a distressing lack of success. Hoping to augment his income, he wrote his first story, A Study in Scarlet. His detective, Sherlock Holmes, was modeled in part after Dr. Joseph Bell of the Edinburgh Infirmary, a man with spectacular powers of observation, analysis, and inference. Conan Doyle may have been influenced also by his admiration for the neat plots of Gaboriau and for Poe's detective, M. Dupin. After several rejections, the story was sold to a British publisher for ?5, and thus was born the world's best-known and most-loved fictional detective. Fifty-nine more Sherlock Holmes adventures followed. Once, wearying of Holmes, his creator killed him off, but was forced by popular demand to resurrect him. Sir Arthur-he had been knighted for this defense of the British cause in his The Great Boer War-became an ardent Spiritualist after the death of his son Kingsley, who had been wounded at the Somme in World War I. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle died in Sussex in 1930.
Bring The Classics To Life. These novels have been adapted into 10 short chapters that will excite the reluctant reader as well as the enthusiastic one. Key words are defined and used in context. Multiple-choice questions require the student to recall specific details, sequence the events, draw inferences from story context, develop another name for the chapter, and choose the main idea. Let the Classics introduce Kipling, Stevenson, and H.G. Wells. Your students will embrace the notion of Crusoe's lonely reflections, the psychological reactions of a Civil War soldier at Chancellorsville, and the tragedy of the Jacobite Cause in 18th Century Scotland. In our society, knowledge of these Classics is a cultural necessity. Improves fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.
For use in schools and libraries only. Warned that death awaits him if he claims his inheritance of a cursed ancestral manor, Sir Henry Baskerville calls on Sherlock Holmes for assistance.
In this, one of the most famous of Doyle's mysteries, the tale of an ancient curse and a savage ghostly hound comes frighteningly to life. The gray towers of Baskerville Hall and the wild open country of Dartmoor will haunt the reader as Holmes and Watson seek to unravel the many secrets of the misty English bogs.
Kids--come watch master sleuth Sherlock Holmes as he wrestles with one of his most famous cases! A classic mystery will come to life for a new generation as young readers learn the secrets of detection at the side of the very best. With Holmes's trusted assistant, Dr. John Watson, narrating the mystery, kids will join Holmes in sorting through clues, red herrings, and incriminating evidence both in the book itself and in a private "for your eyes only" dossier at the end.
Mr. Sherlock Holmes who was usually very late in the mornings save upon those not infrequent occasions when he was up all night was seated at the breakfast table. I stood upon the hearth-rug and picked up the stick which our visitor had left behind him the night before.
Perhaps the most popular of all Sherlock Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles combines the traditional detective tale with elements of horror. When Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on the wild Devon moorland with the footprints of a giant hound nearby, the blame is placed on a family curse-and it is up to Holmes and Watson to solve the mystery of the legend. Rationalism is pitted against the supernatural and good against evil, as Sherlock Holmes tries to defeat a foe almost his equal. Introduction and notes by Christopher Fraying.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote his famous tale "The Hound of the Baskervilles" in response to popular demand for another Sherlock Holmes story. The legendary curse of the Hound of the Baskervilles warns of a devil-beast that haunts the moors near the Baskerville home on the English moors. But the new heir of the family is determined to disprove the legend and solve the mystery of his uncleas recent death, so he calls on the expertise of Sherlock Holmes and his loyal assistant Dr. Watson. This unique Whole Story edition combines a thrilling mystery with detailed captions and related factual information about Conan Doyle, late-nineteenth century England, and the enormous success of Sherlock Holmes. The background information, illustrations, and photographs all come together to put the story in the context of its era.
The curse of the Baskervilles began in the 17th Century, when Sir Hugo swore he would give his soul to possess the beautiful daughter of a yeoman. He captured her, but she escaped. He saddled his horse and chased the girl over the moors until she dropped dead from exhaustion . . . and then a black hell-hound appeared, with eyes like fire, and ripped out Hugo's throat. @Now, years later, the Hound has returned. Already it has caused the death of Hugo's descendant, Sir Charles Baskerville. Can Sherlock Holmes stop the curse before it claims Henry Baskerville, the heir of Sir Charles?
The most famous of the Sherlock Holmes stories,The Hound of the Baskervillesfeatures the phantom dog of Dartmoor, which, according to an ancient legend, has haunted the Baskervilles for generations. When Sir Charles Baskerville dies suddenly of a heart attack on the grounds of the family's estate, the locals are convinced that the spectral hound is responsible, and Holmes is called in. "Conan Doyle triumphed and triumphed deservedly," G. K. Chesterton wrote, "because he took his art seriously, because he lavished a hundred little touches of real knowledge and genuine picturesqueness on the police novelette." From the Trade Paperback edition.
