특징

본 책은 이제마의 ‘동의수세보원’을 최초로 영역한 책으로 그가 정립한 사상의학의 이론과 그에 따른 치료법을 체계적으로 알기 쉽게 설명한 해설서이다. 사상의학이란 모든 질병의 변화가 체질의 특성에 따라 달라진다고 보고, 인체를 그 기질과 성격에 따라 태양, 소양, 태음, 소음의 4가지로 구별하여 각각의 체질에 따른 처방을 해야 한다는 이론이다. 사상의학은 중의학과 구별되는 한의학의 핵심 중 하나로 한의학뿐만 아니라 일상생활에서도 널리 통용되어 일반인들에게 익숙한 의학적 접근법이라고 할 수 있다.
1996년에 출간된 이후 지속적인 수정 및 보완작업을 통해 개정 증보된‘동의수세보원’은 초판보다 이제마 선생의 뜻을 좀 더 근접하게 담아내기 위한 노력의 결실로, 한의학 분야에 종사하는 사람뿐만 아니라 자기의 타고난 체질을 알고 그에 맞추어 양생하고자 하는 일반 독자들에게도 도움을 줄 수 있을 것이다.


내용

동의수세보원에 대해

동의수세보원은 사상의학의 창시자로 알려진 이제마의 저서로 원본은 4권 2책으로 구성되어 있으며, 생전에 일부가 간행되고 사망 후 두 제자에 의해 유고가 편찬되었다. 사상의학의 이론과 치료법을 체계적으로 정립한 이제마의 동의수세보원은 사상의 기본 이론과 이를 접목시킨 임상 방법 및 결과, 처방의 효과 등을 상세히 밝히고 있다. 인체를 그 기질과 성격에 따라 태양, 소양, 태음, 소음의 사상으로 나누고 모든 질병의 변화는 체질의 특성에 따라 달라진다고 보고 그 원리를 상세히 밝혀 놓음으로써 누구나 이 책을 통해 인간 생리의 특수성을 이해하고 처방을 운용할 수 있게 하였다. 따라서 의학 분야 종사자뿐만 아니라 철학을 공부하는 사람과 자신의 체질을 알고 그에 맞추어 양생하고자 하는 일반인들도 어렵지 않게 도움을 받을 수 있도록 저술된 대중적인 의학서라고 할 수 있다.

이제마선생의 백 년 전 꿈에 다가감

東武 이제마 선생(1837-1900)이 돌아가시기 얼마 전 “사상의학이 100년 후면 온 세상을 풍미할 것”이라고 예언한 바가 있다. 그리고 백여 년이 지난 지금 동의수세보원의 영문판이 번역되어 출간되었다. 이제마 선생의 백 년 전 꿈이 실현되기 위한 초석이 놓인 것이다.
한의학 원전을 영어로 번역하는 일은 무모할 정도로 힘든 일이다. 한의학용어 자체가 영어로 표준화 되어 있지 않았기 때문에 번역작업은 단지 글을 옮기는 것에 그치는 것이 아니라 동양의 의학사상을 오롯이 표현해낼 수 있어야 했다. 역자 최승훈 교수는 중화민국 중국의약학원에서 객좌부교수로 재직하면서 동의수세보원을 영어로 강의한 경험을 살려 번역에 착수했다. 이후 WHO에서 전통의학담당 고문으로 일하면서 한의학용어의 표준화에 앞장섰으며, 그 결과 2007년 7월 세계전통의학 표준용어집인 WHO-IST(WHO International Standard Terminologies on Traditional Medicine in the Western Pacific Region)가 출간되기도 하였다. WHO-IST의 출간으로 동의수세보원은 영어권 독자뿐만 아니라 세계인에게 다가갈 수 있는 날개를 달게 되었다. 초판에 이어 이번 개정판은 이제마선생의 백 년 전 꿈에 다가가는 계기가 될 것이다.

on Nature and Order*

1 There are four environmental frames: locality, human relationships,
social relationships, and times of heaven.

2 There are four human affairs: living quarters, clanships, social acquaintances
and appointed roles.

3 The ears are capable of hearing times of heaven. The eyes are capable of
seeing social relationships. The nose is capable of smelling human relationships.
The mouth is capable of tasting locality.

4 Times of heaven are extremely variable. Social relationships are extremely
extensive. Human relationships are extremely wide. Locality is extremely
diverse.

5 The Lung executes appointed roles well. The Spleen harmonizes social
acquaintances. The Liver establishes clanships. The Kidney determines
living quarters.
