    1952년 영국 케임브리지에서 태어나 세인트 존스 칼리지에서 영문학을 전공했다. 1978년 BBC 라디오 드라마로 시작된 <은하수를 여행하는 히치하이커를 위한 안내서>가 공전의 히트를 기록하고 휴고상, 골든 팬상 등을 받으며 '코믹 SF'라는 장르를 개척한 인물로 주목받았다. 2001년 5월 49세의 나이로 사망했다.
