Up a Road Slowly은 성장소설로 1967년 뉴베리 메달을 수상한 작품이다.

이야기의 배경은 20세기 중반 미국을 배경으로 하고 있다.
7살 된 소녀 줄리는 어머니의 죽음으로 인해 줄리는 이모인 코델리아와 함께 살게 된다. 코델리아는 아직 미혼의 학교 선생님으로 시내에서 떨어진 곳에 큰 집을 짓고 살고 있다. 코델리아의 오빠인 해스켈은 집 뒤에서 개조한 짐차에 살고 있다. 그는 알코올 중독이었으며 작가가 되고 싶어했지만, 원고를 한번도 쓰지는 못했다.
처음에 코델리아는 슬픔에 잠겨있는 줄리를 엄하게 대했다. 하지만 그녀가 커가면서 줄리는 이모를 좋아하게 되고 이모의 집을 자신의 집처럼 여기게 된다. 코델리아 이모와 줄리는 서로 아끼고 사랑하게 되어 코델리아 이모는 진심으로 줄리를 위하게 된다.

이야기는 7살에서 17살에 이르는 줄리의 성장기를 보여주며 또한 이 시기 아이들의 평범한 삶, 그리고 질투, 고민 등을 보여준다. 그리고 줄리 주변의 그리 좋지 않은 환경 속에서도 줄리는 이를 배경으로 성장한다.
