미국 오하이오 주에서 태어났으며 오랫동안 영국에서 고등학교 교사로 일했다. 『두 개의 달 위를 걷다』와 『방랑자호』로 뉴베리 상을 두 차례 받았고, 『루비 홀러』로 카네기 상을 받으며 미국과 영국에서 가장 권위 있는 아동청소년문학상을 모두 받은 작가가 되었다. 우리나라에 출간된 작품으로는 『두 개의 달 위를 걷다』, 『행복한 파스타 만들기』, 『루비 홀러』, 『방랑자호』, 『나무에서 떨어진 뜻밖의 선물』 등이 있다.
