* Baduk, learned from a woman professional player

The series of Baduk, Made Fun and Easy for Baduk beginners has be completed with the third volume. Chihyung Nam a professional Baduk player in Korea and professor wrote the column with same title in Korea Times a english newspaper over 3 years to teach fundamental studies of Baduk to foreigners who have interest this oriental game.
Nam gave you great lessons from the basic of Baduk including the terms and rules to practical steps by stages at Baduk, Made Fun and Easy Vol.1 published in 2006, and more profound lessons including Sente, Joseki, Ko, Sacrifice, Atari, and other technical skills in addition to conceptional teachings at Baduk, Made Fun and Easy Vol.2(2007). Nam has given lessons about Salvation, Bend, Openings, Death and Life at the newly-published 3rd volume so you could learn the advanced studies of basic Baduk.


* 여성 프로기사가 쓴 외국인을 위한 바둑 입문서

현 프로기사이자 명지대에서 바둑학을 가르치고 있는 남치형 교수가 쉽게 바둑을 배울 수 있도록 돕기 위해 펴낸 ‘Baduk, Made Fun and Easy’ 시리즈가 3편을 마지막으로 완간되었다. 코리아 타임즈The Korea Times에 3년 가까이 같은 제목으로 연재하며 많은 외국인 바둑 초보자들로부터 호평을 받아온 컬럼을 단행본으로 묶은 이 시리즈는 2006년 10월 첫 권을 출간한 이래로 지난 해 10월에는 2편을, 그리고 올해 완결편인 3편을 출간함으로써 바둑에 대해 깊은 관심은 갖고 있으나 뚜렷한 배움의 방법을 찾지 못하는 세계 바둑 애호가에게 훌륭한 안내서의 역할을 할 것으로 기대된다. 특히 이 시리즈는 단순히 바둑의 기술을 가르치는데 그치지 않고 바둑의 큰 틀과 개념을 전달하여 일목요연하고 보다 풍부하게 바둑을 익히도록 독자들을 이끈다는 점에서 더욱 뜻깊다.
이번에 새로 출간된 (은행나무刊/영문)은 초보 바둑 애호가들을 위한 기초 시리즈의 마지막 완결편이라 할 수 있다. 앞서 출간된 (2006)은 바둑 용어 설명과 경기 진행 방식 등 아주 기초적인 단계부터 시작하여 행마에 이르기까지 단계별로 쉽게 따라올 수 있도록 정리하여 처음 바둑을 접하는 초보자들이 쉽게 기초를 파악할 수 있도록 했다. 그 뒤를 잇는 2권(2007)을 통해서는 1권과 이어서 선수, 정석, 패, 사활, 단수 등 보다 깊이 있는 기술적 가르침부터 ‘대마불사’에 이르는 개념적 이해까지 보다 심화된 바둑의 기초를 다질 수 있다. 저자는 초보 애호가들을 대상으로 한 기초편을 마무리하는 신간 에서 단수, 자주 이용되는 포석, 사활과 궁도 그리고 심화된 행마 등의 내용을 차근차근 풀어내고 있다.

* Baduk as a game to enjoy through your life

You can take pleasure through a game without a hard effort. Above and beyond joys of victory, to enjoy game itself apart from the consequence is the force of the game to make people love it continually. However, to discover human nature from a game and to learn how to live your life should be extraordinary. Baduk, loved from generation to generation, is the most appropriate one to cultivate your mind and to perceive a truth of a life. You could hear the Ten-Teaching from Baduk which is traditional lesson for Baduk players; The man being striving hard after winning may lose the game; Avoid meaningless contention, keep yourself under control, then you will win the victory; Be moderate, not to be biased; Don't get too hung up on the small benefit; Don't waste your time and energy to regret something already happened; No limits and no bounds to improve yourself. These are the very rules of righteous life! Certainly Baduk is the most pleasure-giving game than any other games.
Even Baduk has only one important but simple rule that two people put black and white stones alternately, people used to feel difficult to play it. You should foresee what will happen several turns hence and even what the opponent think. It is a so psychological and strategic game. For beginners, it's harder. You can't get some places or teachers easily. Especially foreign amateurs have difficulty in getting useful help. Since Baduk is rooted in China, Korea and Japan, foreigners get insufficient informations evne their huge interest and demand about it. There are regular Baduk competition over the world already and many foreigners attend them. Their interest and need are getting bigger and bigger for Baduk, but its supply are not enough.
The foreign devotee of Baduk could learn this meaningful and delight game from the beginning easily, and have fun with marvelous joys on the wooden board. As the author hopes, more people would taste the pleasure of Baduk with this Book.


* 인생의 희노애락을 배우는 놀이, 바둑

하나의 놀이를 통해 즐거움을 얻는 것은 쉬운 일이다. 이겼을 때의 기쁨은 물론이요, 승패를 떠나 놀이 자체가 주는 재미를 만끽하는 것은 놀이가 가진 힘이고, 그 생명을 이어가는 원동력이다. 그러나 놀이에서 사람의 본성을 발견하고, 사람이 살아가는 모습을 배우는 것은 흔한 일이 아니다. 기나긴 역사를 자랑하며 사랑받아 온 바둑은 중국의 성군 순 황제가 아들의 훈육을 위해 만들었다는 설이 있을 만큼 인격을 수양하고 인생을 깨닫는 데 어느 놀이보다 알맞은 놀이이다. 예로부터 전해오는 ‘바둑십훈(十訓)’을 보면 조급하게 이기려고 하면 오히려 지기 마련이고, 다투려고 하지 말고 스스로를 지키고 조심하면 이기게 된다고 하였다. 또한 싸움에 이겼다고 해서 교만을 부리면 곧 그 세가 퇴색하고, 한쪽으로 너무 치우치지 말고 중용의 도를 지키라고 하였다. 작은 이익에 집착하거나 이미 일어난 일에 뒤늦게 애쓰는 것을 경계할 것이며, 부지런히 갈고 닦는 데는 그 끝이 없다고 하였으니, 이야말로 인생의 가장 중요한 가르침들이 아니겠는가. 네모난 바둑판에 두 사람이 마주 앉아 인생을 논하고 세상을 배우는 놀이인 바둑은 그만큼 어느 놀이도 쉽게 선사하지 못하는 큰 즐거움을 맛보게 한다.
이러한 재미와 의의에도 불구하고 바둑은 흔히 배우기 어렵다고 여겨진다. 어떤 면에서는 그러한 생각이 옳다고도 할 수 있다. 처음 바둑을 시작하려면 적어도 정석 몇 가지는 알아야 한다고 생각하기 때문이다. 뿐만 아니라 바둑은 몇 수 앞을 내다보며 수를 두어야 하고, 상대방의 수를 예측하고 그 생각을 읽어야 하는 지극히 심리적이고 전략적인 놀이이다. 때문에 접하면 접할수록 끝이 없는 바둑의 길이지만 처음 바둑을 시작하고자 하는 이들에게는 더욱 어렵게만 여겨지는 것이 인지상정. 더욱이 바둑을 배울 수 있는 곳은 한정되어 있고 혼자 시작하기엔 기초부터 배울 만한 정보가 턱없이 부족한 것도 사실이다.
그간 기초부터 시작하는 바둑 실용서에 대한 필요를 느꼈던 각국의 바둑 애호가들은 'Baduk, Made Fun and Easy' 시리즈를 통해 쉽고 재미있게 바둑의 기초를 단단히 다지고, 바둑판 위에 펼쳐지는 다양한 재미를 만끽할 수 있다. 또한 “바둑을 두는 궁극적인 목적은 그것을 즐기는 것‘이라는 저자의 바람대로 이 책을 통해 더 많은 이들이 바둑의 진정한 즐거움을 맛볼 수 있을 것이다.
