Son Yang-Won(1902-1950)

Son Yang-Won is remembered as a martyr of love who embraced with love and prayer the burden of colonial oppression and war that marred Korea¡¯s modern history. He converted to Christianity at the age of 7, and, beginning in 1926, ministered in Gyeongnam, Busan, Gwangju, Yeosu, and other regions. In 1939 he began his Aeyangwon ministry with leprosy patients. He was arrested 1940 by the Japanese colonial government for opposing Shinto worship, and was released with Korea¡¯s liberation in 1945. During the Yeosu Revolt in 1948, Son¡¯s two sons, Dong-Sin and Dong-In, were shot and killed by communist soldiers. In spite of this, Rev. Son Yang-Won, seeking to practice the love of Christ, adopted the young soldier who had killed his sons. On September 13th, 1950, a few months after the outbreak of the Korean War, Rev. Son was captured by the communists and shot on the 28th of the same month. An account of his life, presented in the book and the film, Sarangui Wonjatan (Atomic Bomb of Love), has been a source of deep inspiration to many people. He left behind some two thousand pages of sermon texts, letters, and prayers.

¡°Through his life and martyrdom, Rev. Son Yang-Won stands among the few who shine brightest in the history of martyrdom in the Korean Church, and he has given us an opportunity to present ourselves proudly to the worldwide Church. ¡¦ Rev. Son Yang-Won lived out the self-abasement (kenosis) embodied in actions described by phrases such as ¡°to depart,¡± ¡°to give up,¡± ¡°to go down,¡± ¡°to submit,¡± ¡°to lack.¡±¡¦ And he was filled with such a passionate love that he sought to revive not only the poor and the hurting—those who are commonly the objects of human charity—but even a man who had killed [his sons]. The distinctive political realities of his day made the practice of such passion shine even more brightly. ¡¦ I hope this account will become a model for the restoration of martyr spirituality, and thereby contribute to a greater inner faithfulness in the Korean Church.¡±
