이 책은 미국의 초등학생들이 영단어를 학습하는 방법을 그대로 담았습니다. 미국의 초등학교에서는 학년별로 꼭 알아야 할 어휘 목록을 정해 암기하도록 권하고 있습니다. 학교에서 제시하는 어휘들은 가장 즐겨 사용하는 빈도수 어휘(frequency word)들입니다. 보통 초등학교 3학년이 되기 전에 200개의 빈도수 어휘를 알아야 합니다. 사실 200개의 빈도수 어휘를 알면 학교 생활이나 사회 생활을 하는데 큰 불편이 없습니다. 영단어 학습의 정답은 바로 빈도수 어휘입니다.

〈아이작의 뼈다귀 영단어〉에서는 빈도수 어휘(frequency word)를 ‘뼈다귀 단어’라고 이름지었습니다. 뼈다귀 단어에 속하는 것은 a, an, the, am, ar, is 등과 같이 회화, 작문, 문법 등에서 뼈대를 이루는 단어들입니다. 이러한 뼈다귀 단어들을 먼저 외운 다음, 그 뼈다귀 위에 살을 붙이는 알맹이 단어(apple, school, teacher, hospital 등)를 학습합니다.
