그들이 왜 남쪽을 향해 걷는지는 알 수 없다. 다만 아버지는 아들에게 이런 말을 할 뿐이다. “우리는 불을 옮기는 사람들이다” 그러나 그들의 여행은 쉽지 않다. 세상은 매우 삭막하며 인간이 인간을 죽이고 먹는 일이 반복되고 있다. 트럭을 타고 다니며 인간을 사냥하고 배고픔을 참지 못해 아기를 구워 먹기도 한다. 가장 큰 어려움은 매일 각혈을 하며 잠을 깨는 아버지. 그는 자신이 죽어가고 있다는 것도 잘 안다.

그럼에도 불구하고 이 모든 위험으로부터 아들만은 지켜내기 위해 아버지는 버틴다. 예기치 않은 공격, 위험한 상황에의 노출, 그리고 무엇보다 굶주림으로부터... 그러나 이미 사라진 문명에 대해 아들은 알지 못한다. 문명이 존재하던 사회에 대한 어떤 기억이나 지식, 체험도 그에겐 없다. 때문에 아들은 모든 사람들에게 다가가 그들을 돕고 껴안고자 한다. 그러나 아버지는 아들을 제외한 살아남은 모든 사람을 경계하고 있다.
