This book suggests that there has been too little attention paid to speaking in its own right. Whereas there is a large body of research into written mode, spoken mode has tended to be neglected. In this book, Hughes provides an appropriate level of detail on key areas of recent research. A central argument of the book is that linguists have tended to conflate 'Language' and 'Speaking'. Much new data is emerging about distinctive features of spoken language from fields as diverse as corpus linguistics, neurolinguistics and language processing. This book is therefore a timely review of approcahes to the topic of teaching and researching speaking and one which draws together these insights in an accessible way. In so doing, the book attempts to carve out a new territory for the topic of spoken language within the research territory. Beginning with a description of the historical and conceptual background of speaking, the text will then be divided into three broad areas of speaking skills throughout the different sections of the book: discourse and interactions, discourse and grammar, and fluency and pronunciation.
