뉴베리 상을 수상한 작품으로, 초등학생 아이의 가슴 시린 성장기를 편지와 일기 형식으로 담은 사실주의 소년소설이다. 동화 작가 헨쇼 선생님을 좋아하는 리 보츠는 초등학교 2학년 때부터 편지를 쓰기 시작한다. 편지는 초등학교 6학년 때까지 끊기지 않고, 리는 자신의 일상을 솔직담백하게 적어 보낸다. 헨쇼 선생님에게 궁금한 것들을 잔뜩 적어 보냈다가 오히려 10가지 물음이 담긴 답장 때문에 억지로 긴 답장을 써야 했던 리는, 그 뒤로 글쓰기에 익숙해지면서 일기를 쓰기 시작한다. 헨쇼 선생님에게 편지를 쓰듯이.
