Chapter One
Prince Charming galloped across the open plain on Chauncey, his trusty steed. The horse's golden mane flew in the wind. Lightning flashed in the sky and thunder rumbled and rolled.
"Onward, Chauncey, to the highest room of the tallest tower!" cried Prince Charming valiantly. "My princess awaits rescue by her handsome prince."
The spotlights were on in a little run-down theater on the outskirts of the fabled land of Far Far Away. Charming was playing his part with gusto, but the audience grumbled and fidgeted in their seats. As soon as the curtain had gone up, they'd realized they were in for a low-budget production. The prince's "steed" was just a wooden hobbyhorse. And the set was even worse! A wobbly castle tower sat in front of the cheaply painted backdrop.
Prince Charming pretend-galloped up to the base of the tower.
"Whoa there, Chauncey!" he cried. He dismounted, tossed his blond hair back with a flourish, and set his stick horse down on the stage.
A princess leaned out of the tower window. "Hark!" she cried. "The brave Prince Charming approacheth."
"Fear not, fair maiden!" cried Charming. "I shall slay the monster that guards you and then take my place as rightful king."
A short, round actor in a cheap ogre costume shuffled onto the stage. "Grrrrrrrrrr!" he cried.
The audience cheered.
Prince Charming glanced out at the audience in disbelief. Why were they cheering for the ogre!? He hated that ogre. And everyone else should hate him, too!
Charming pulled himself together and struggled to remember his words. "Prepare, foul beast, to enter into a world of pain with which you are not familiar!"
A heckler in the audience stood up and tossed his chair. "Off the stage, Goldilocks!" he jeered. Charming ducked as the chair whizzed past him. He watched it slide across the stage and bump into the rickety tower.
He cleared his throat nervously. "Prepare, foul beast . . ."
The tower creaked and groaned behind him. He glanced over his shoulder and cringed. The whole stage set was about to collapse!
The backdrop came down around him with a loud boom.
