을지로를 말하는 17가지 도시건축적 시도들 『을지로』 제2권. 사회적 과정을 살펴 오늘의 도시를 탐구하고 그것을 새로운 건축적 논의로 이어가려는 'GSUA(한국예술종합학교 미술원 건축과 예술전문사)'가 을지로를 건축적 시선으로 바라본 책이다.

[책소개]

Series of events happened to be an opportunity for once again examining the fact that urban construction in hyper polis Seoul is not made from a combination of architectural fragments that were born from other cities but closely relates to the substructure of the current hyper polis. In other words, a close watch was needed in the fact that a connection doesn’t mean a simple relationship between the superstructure and its substructure. Rather, if we borrow from the expression by Benjamin’s introspection, it is in ‘relationship of expression’ that communicates with the needs, changes and effects of the current era based on the understanding on the substructure.
There was another incident by the end of the seminars. It was an official declaration on the change in Seun Complex renovation plan. The key changes are regarding cancellation of the district withdrawal and overall pulling down type of disposal in block units. This was already well understood among the related parties and the Euljiro work by the GSUA in 2012 was on the assumption on those changes. However, these changes meant that we need to seek for a new meaning of Seun Complex within the urban area, hence raising the necessity for a new view on the second work by the GSUA on Euljiro.
The Seun District passes through the center of Seun Complex as if an 1km long axis is shaking through the whole aspect of Seun Complex. Now, let’s consider Euljiro. As confirmed earlier, we can see from the disorderly roads and highways that Euljiro is not fulfilling its function. And we can expect a new vigorous wave shaking around the roads and blocks in vicinity. The problem is what will make the movement and cause a shake that resonates along the long axis of Seun Complex. The second work on Euljiro by GSUA in 2013 found the answer in the public area and its network.

연속 세미나는 HYPERPOLIS 서울에서의 도시건축은 전혀 다른 도시들에서 잉태된 건축적 파편들이 조합되어 만들어지는 것이 아니라 지금 여기의 도시, 즉 HYPERPOLIS가 가지고 있는 하부구조와 밀접하게 연계된다는 것을 다시 한 번 확인하는 일이 되었다. 조금의 주의가 필요했던 것은 연계라는 것이 상부구조로써의 도시건축이 그 하부구조의 단순한 반영의 관계가 아니라는 점이었다. 오히려 더욱 그 하부구조에 대한 비판적 이해를 바탕 삼아 시대적 요구 및 변화와 서로 영향을 주고받는, 벤야민의 성찰을 빌린다면 ‘표현의 관계’라는 점이었다.
세미나를 마칠 무렵 또 하나의 사건이 있었다. 세운촉진지구계획을 변경하는 공식 발표가 있었다. 핵심 내용은 세운상가 군 철거계획의 취소와 블록단위 전면철거 방식의 폐기였다. 충분히 알고 있었을 뿐 아니라 2012년 GSUA의 을지로 작업은 이미 그와 같은 변경을 전제로 진행된 작업이었다. 그러나 막상 변경계획이 발표된 이후 역사 도심 내에서 세운지구가 가져야 할 의미를 새롭게 모색해야만 하는 상황이 되고 보니 그것과 밀접한 영역, 을지로에서의 두 번째 GSUA의 작업은 새삼 새로운 시각을 필요로 하게 되었다.
세운지구 전체의 중심을 세운상가 군이 관통하고 있다. 마치 1 킬로미터의 긴 축이 요동침으로써 세운지구 전체까지 흔들어버릴 듯한 형국이다. 을지로를 보자. 이미 확인되었듯 도로의 위계와 접속도로 볼 때, 그 성능을 채 다하지 못하고 있는 을지로다. 그곳에 지금과는 다른 활발한 움직임들이 도로 및 주변 블록 사이를 누비며 파동을 일으키는 사태를 상상한다. 문제는 무엇이 을지로에 파동을 일으키고 세운상가 긴 축에 요동을 일으킬 것인가이다. 그 답을 2013년 GSUA의 두 번째 을지로 작업은 공공영역과 그 네트워크로 설정하기에 이르렀다.
