소시민 의식에 대한 비판과 역사적 책임의식

오스카라는 예술적 형상을 매개로 그라스는 20세기 초반과 중반(1899~1954)의 독일 역사에 대한 비판적 서술을 시도하고 있다. 그러므로 오스카의 개인사는 거의 언제나 독일의 역사와 병행한다. 예컨대, 1927년에 오스카 자신이 의도적으로 일으킨 지하 창고에서의 추락 사건은 바이마르 공화국 말기에 독일 소시민 계층이 급격하게 나치즘을 추종하게 되는 역사적 사실을 떠올리게 한다. 어머니의 외사촌 형제이자 애인이며 오스카의 실제 아버지일지도 모르는 브론스키의 죽음은 폴란드의 패배를 의미한다. 오스카가가 그레프 부인과 벌이는 질척거리는 성교는 수렁에 빠진 러시아와의 전쟁을, 아버지 마체라트의 죽음은 독일 제국의 붕괴를 암시한다. 그리고 화물열차 안에서의 오스카의 성장은 나치 독일의 패망과 일치한다. 또한 양파 술집에서의 우스꽝스러운 눈물짜내기 장면은 슬퍼하는 능력을 잃어버린 세태에 대한 풍자라고 하겠다. 오스카가 머릿속으로는 정상적인 지성을 가지고 있지만, 외형상으로는 난쟁이의 모습을 하고 있는 것도 같은 식으로 해석할 수 있다. 18세기 독일 시민 계급의 예민한 지성이었던 시인 횔덜린이 '생각은 많으나, 행동은 빈약한'이라고 하면서 당대의 독일 지성이 처한 딜레마를 표현한 것처럼, 오스카라는 인물은 이념과 현실의 참담한 괴리에 짓눌려 있는 20세기 초중반 독일 시민 사회의 딜레마를 나타내는 또다는 전형으로 해석될 수 있을 것이다. 어쨋든 2차 세계 대전 오스카는 조금 성장하게 되는데, 이것은 다름아니라 독일 시민사회의 정신적 성장에 대한 작가의 기대를 암시하는 것이라 하겠다. 작가는 독일 시민사회가 양차 대전을 통해 지독하게 혼쭐이 났으니, 이제 각성의 계기가 마련된 것이 아닌가 하는 점을 말하고 싶었을 것이다. 하지만 그래 봤자 오스카는 121센티미터의 난쟁이에 지나지 않는다! 게다가 등에는 새로 혹까지 생겨난다. 과거 역사에 대한 철저한 반성이 없는 전후 독일 사회에 대한 그라스의 안타까움은 그만큼 절절한 것이다. 그라스는 말한다. '전후의 영광이란 그저 영광에 지나지 않으며, 어제까지만 해도 생생하면서도 잔인하게 자랑했던 그 모든 행위와 범죄들을 끊임없는 야옹 소리와 함께 과거의 역사로 돌려버리려는 고양이의 행위에 지나지 않는 것이다.' 지극한 안타까움에서 나온 독설이라고 하겠다. 작가 그라스의 문제의식은 이 같은 '소시민 의식에 대한 해부'와 함께 '역사적 책임'이라는 말로 압축할 수 있다.
