ⓒsubjunctive mood 는 엄밀한 언어학적 번역어는 ’접속법’이 되어야 한다. 다른 라틴어 출신 언어들이 전부 접속법이라는 용어로 번역해서 사용하는데 영어만 가정법이라는 용어로 번역해서 사용한다면, 이는 학문의 엄밀성이 무너지는 것이나 다름 없다. subjunctive(접속법)은 종속접속사절 속의 뜬금없는 동사원형, 독립문에 쓰인 동사원형, were-subjunctive 이외에는 사용되지 않는다. 그러나 초, 중급 영문법에서는 제시하지 않는 것이 좋다.
