"I keep picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all.  Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean - except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff - I mean if they're running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them."

This is the Holden's answer when he was asked by Phoebe of 'what do you like to be?'

I'd heard this novel a lot but I didn't open the cover. But finally I've done it. It's about a boy who was going through his teens. So he had a lot of anger - even though he himself didn't know exactly where this came from and also was in despair. He didn't know what he had to do in school and have any marvelous dream about what to be in the future.

However, he had a warm heart to care about his dead brother Allie and his younger sister Phoebe. So maybe Holden is not that bad guy or bastard as he mentioned always.

This book was written quite a long time ago maybe in 1940-ish. So I could see some old English here and there and it was great experience to know and learn those e-pressions and words. Until now, I couldn't understand the OLD. He put this OLD all the time.
